Months before the federal election, German Chancellor Angela Merkel's political coalition still leads over its main rivals.

According to a poll by the Emnid Research Institute and the Bild am Sonntag newspaper, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) led by Ms. Merkel received 38% of the vote while the Social Democratic Party of former President of the European Parliament Martin Schulz dropped to 25%.

The Free Democratic Party (FDP), the Green Party, the Left Party and the Alternative for Germany (AfD) all received an equal number of votes, at 8%. The poll also showed that if the German chancellor were elected directly, 52% would choose Angela Merkel, while only 29% would choose Martin Schulz.

Germany's general election will take place on September 24. Many local newspapers predict it will be a race between Ms. Merkel and Mr. Martin Schulz.

Earlier in February, some polls showed that Martin Schulz would lead, even potentially replacing Merkel because the chancellor lost points over her immigration policy. However, because Martin Schulz's Social Democratic Party (SPD) failed in the state elections in Saarland, Schleswig-Holstein and North Rhine-Westphalia, hopes for Martin Schulz's victory decreased because he could not turn his reputation into votes./.
