Participating in peacekeeping forces, Vietnam's long-term commitment

On the afternoon of May 26, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Pham Binh Minh received Ms. Ameerah Haq, Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and Director of the Department of Field Support for Peacekeeping Operations, on the occasion of her visit to Vietnam and attendance at the establishment ceremony of the Vietnam Peacekeeping Center.
At the meeting, Deputy Prime Minister Pham Binh Minh expressed his satisfaction with the progress in the multifaceted cooperation between Vietnam and the United Nations (UN) in recent times; affirming that the Vietnamese Government always attaches importance to and highly appreciates the UN's financial, technical and experience support.
The Deputy Prime Minister emphasized that participating in the UN peacekeeping force is a serious and long-term commitment of Vietnam to increase its contribution to the cause of maintaining and building peace in the world; announced that two Vietnamese liaison officers will begin participating in the UN Peacekeeping Mission in South Sudan from June 2014; at the same time, Vietnam is also urgently developing a legal document on this issue to create a legal framework for Vietnam's participation in UN peacekeeping activities.
Ms. Ameerah Haq expressed her pleasure to visit Vietnam; thanked the Vietnamese Government for its thoughtful welcome; highly appreciated Vietnam's contributions to global issues of peace, security, cooperation and development, especially its commitment to actively participate in UN peacekeeping activities. She also welcomed Vietnam's establishment of the Peacekeeping Center and the dispatch of two Vietnamese officers to the Peacekeeping Mission in South Sudan, and affirmed that the UN will continue to support Vietnam in this field.
