Thanh Chuong: Nearly 5,000 hectares of summer-autumn rice are infected with leaf rollers
(Baonghean.vn) - This summer-autumn crop, Thanh Chuong district planted 5,500 hectares of rice. At this time, some early rice plants have started to form panicles; currently, small leaf rollers are developing and causing serious damage to an area of nearly 2,000 hectares.
Through inspection by the District Plant Cultivation and Plant Protection Station, by July 10, 2017, the 4th generation of adult leaf rollers were beginning to emerge, creating 5th generation larvae at high density over a large area, causing damage to summer-autumn rice during the tillering and panicle initiation period.

According to Mr. Nguyen Nhu Quan - Deputy Head of Thanh Chuong Plant Protection Station, the infected area is about 5,000 hectares, in almost all localities in the district. The characteristic of leaf rollers is that they are very difficult to detect. If they are not detected early and prevented in time, when the rice leaves are curled and turn white, it is too late. Especially in the 5th generation, there is a phenomenon of overlapping generations, so the time for the larvae to develop and cause damage will be longer than in the 4th generation.
To proactively detect and prevent the fifth generation of leaf rollers in a timely and effective manner, the district has directed the Plant Cultivation and Plant Protection Station to act as a focal point to organize communes and towns to coordinate in conducting inspections, distributing tea, zoning and closely monitoring the development of damage caused by leaf rollers in the fields; propagating, guiding and directing effective prevention in areas with high density of worms. Avoid the situation where farmers do not prevent due to subjectivity and lack of information.

The district's Plant Cultivation and Plant Protection Station also recommends that farmers spray pesticides on areas with a density of 50 larvae/m2.2or more for rice in the tillering period, 30 individuals/m2or more for rice in the panicle formation period. Spray with specific pesticides containing active ingredients: Indoxacarb (Ammate 150SC, Clever 150 SC, 300 WG, Sunset 300 WG, Opulent 150SC, Obaone 95WG,...), Chlorantraniliprole (Prevathon 5SC, Voliam targo 063SC, Virtako 40WG,...), Flubendiamide (Takumi 20WG,...).
The most effective spraying time is when most worms are 1-3 years old; when spraying, ensure the recommended amount of water and medicine and correct technique.

Along with that, the district also assigned the Plant Protection Station, communes and functional agencies to strengthen inspection of the business and use of plant protection drugs in the area. Timely detect and prevent the trading of poor quality drugs, drugs not on the list, expired drugs, etc., which affect the prevention results./.
