Thanh Chuong: Breeding specialty black canarium
In recent years, black canarium fruit is considered a specialty fruit, clean fruit, with high economic value. However, due to lack of seed sources, it has significantly affected the productivity as well as the quality of the fruit. In response to this reality, the project "Application of scientific and technological advances in breeding and developing black canarium trees in Thanh Chuong district" chaired by the Gia Lam Vegetable, Flower and Fruit Experimental Research Center is being implemented and has shown initial results.
(Baonghean) -In recent years, black canarium fruit is considered a specialty fruit, clean fruit, with high economic value.
In Nghe An, black canarium trees are distributed in some districts such as Thanh Chuong, Do Luong, Anh Son, Tan Ky. Of which, Thanh Chuong black canarium trees are considered to be of the best quality. Many people in communes such as Thanh Tien, Thanh Lien, Phong Thinh, Cat Van, Thanh Nho, Hanh Lam, Thanh Duc, Thanh Thuy consider this a crop that contributes to hunger eradication and poverty reduction.
Mr. Dinh Viet Mao, Lien Thuong hamlet, Thanh Lien commune has 4 canarium trees in his garden, each year bringing in an income of more than 10 million VND. He said: The family's 4 canarium trees were planted more than 10 years ago. Every year the trees bear fruit, on average each tree gives 150-200 kg of fruit/year. Because he is old and cannot climb the trees himself to pick canariums for sale, every harvest season, he sells the whole tree to traders. The price at the beginning of the season is about 35,000 VND/kg, and at the end of the season it can be over 40,000 VND/kg.
However, canarium trees in Thanh Chuong mainly grow naturally or are planted by seeds planted by people themselves. Moreover, because the plants are not selected and cared for, the yield is unstable, one year is good, the other is bad, many trees produce poor quality fruit, bitter fruit. Plants grown by seeds take a long time to bear fruit (7-8 years to bear fruit), the plants are degenerated, the trees have a high canopy frame, making it difficult to harvest, care for the trees and prevent pests and diseases... The biggest difficulty currently facing the development of canarium trees in Thanh Chuong is the lack of seedlings, especially high-quality seedlings.
Therefore, it is very necessary to apply scientific and technological advances to propagate black canarium trees by grafting to create high-quality seedlings, shorten the fruiting time, thereby building demonstration models to create momentum for the development and expansion of black canarium trees in Thanh Chuong district. The project "Application of scientific and technological advances to create and develop black canarium trees in Thanh Chuong district" was implemented. This is a project within the science and technology program for socio-economic development of districts, cities and towns managed by the Department of Science and Technology. The project has a total budget of 661 million VND, chaired by the Gia Lam Center for Experimental Research of Vegetables, Flowers and Fruits. The unit transferring scientific and technological advances is the Fruit and Vegetable Research Institute. The goal of the project is to protect and promote the local source of black canarium seeds, and establish nurseries to produce canarium seeds among the people.
Black canarium trees, a specialty in Thanh Chuong, are grafted for propagation.
high quality
Mr. Pham Xuan Can, Deputy Director of the Department of Science and Technology, said: The goal of the project is to propagate by grafting to shorten the fruiting time for black canarium trees and restore the black canarium growing profession in Thanh Chuong district. This method has the advantage of grafting trees that quickly produce fruit (the 3rd year after planting, the tree bears fruit for harvest), the seedlings inherit good characteristics from the mother tree, the multiplication coefficient is high, the tree has a low canopy frame, so it is convenient for care, harvesting and pest control. Specifically, the project has built a model nursery to produce black canarium seedlings with a scale of 4,000 seedlings that meet the standards of plant varieties. The process of propagating black canarium trees suitable for the ecological conditions of Nghe An has been completed; 7 technical staff have been trained to master the technical process of propagating canarium trees.
The successful grafting project of black canarium seedlings is also the basis for Thanh Chuong district to convert and introduce more valuable and easy-to-grow crops to replace crops that are currently ineffective in production. Currently, people in communes such as Xuan Tuong, Thanh My, Thanh Thuy... and other neighboring districts have purchased canarium seedlings from the project to plant. Initially, the canarium trees are growing well and have begun to flower. In the third year, the canarium trees will begin to be harvested. The remaining problem is to find a stable outlet for canarium trees, to avoid traders forcing down prices, repeating the "good harvest, low prices" refrain like other agricultural products.
