For many years, Thanh Chuong has been the main cassava material area of Thanh Chuong Cassava Starch Factory (belonging to Intimex Company, Nghe An Branch). To supplement cassava varieties with high productivity to replace old, degraded varieties, at the end of the spring crop of 2011, Intimex Nghe An Company invested nearly 600 million VND to deploy a 10-hectare model of testing cassava variety TC11 (also known as Ketmangcon-Dragon Scale) in 3 communes: Thanh Ngoc, Thanh Lam, Thanh My (Thanh Chuong). Initially, the model results were very positive, cassava variety TC11 has proven to be superior in both productivity and resistance to pests and diseases.

(Baonghean) -For many years, Thanh Chuong has been the main cassava material area of Thanh Chuong Cassava Starch Factory (belonging to Intimex Company, Nghe An Branch).

Mr. Nguyen Cong Anh, Deputy Head of Agricultural Planning Department of Cassava Starch Factory - the person who directly monitors and directs the model, said: In March 2011, Thanh Chuong Cassava Starch Factory coordinated with the District Agricultural Extension - Fisheries Extension Station to conduct a pilot model of 10 hectares of TC11 variety, using KM94 cassava variety as a control.

The TC11 cassava variety in the experimental model in Thanh Ngoc commune (Thanh Chuong) has a yield of nearly 50 tons/ha.

In Thanh Ngoc commune, 4 hectares are planted on gravel soil with a slope of 5-8 degrees; in Thanh Lam commune, 3 hectares are planted on farm land with a slope of 2-3 degrees; in Thanh My commune, 3 hectares are planted on alluvial soil. The planting density is 11,000 trees/ha. Households participating in the model are supported with seedlings and fertilizers (2,500 kg/ha of organic fertilizer, 800 kg/ha of NPK 6-4-8).

The good news is that the germination rate of TC11 cassava variety is on average 98%, has strong growth, and a growing period 40-50 days shorter than KM94 cassava variety. TC11 cassava variety is only 9 months old and has produced 10-12 tubers; the actual yield in 3 communes is 47.3-50.6 tons/ha (6-7 tons/ha higher than KM 94 variety). With the current price of raw cassava (1,100-1,200 VND/kg), TC11 cassava variety gives a total revenue of 58,920,000 VND/ha, net profit of 33,065,000 VND/ha; while KM 94 cassava variety only reaches 50,400,000 VND/ha. Through testing, this variety grows strongly, is drought-resistant and resistant to intensive cultivation, and is widely adapted to many types of soil, especially alluvial soil; Can be planted in scattered crops, structured in puddles... Spring crop 2012 Factory continues to test 20ha.

At the recent Conference to summarize the new experimental model, most delegates and farmers unanimously appreciated the TC11 cassava variety with many outstanding advantages compared to the native cassava varieties widely grown locally.

Mr. Vo Van Dinh, Chairman of Thanh Ngoc Commune People's Committee, excitedly said: "After harvesting 1 hectare of acacia trees in the backyard, my family immediately hired a machine to dig the roots, then deployed a pilot model for the factory on an area of 10 sao. The yield was much higher than the KM 94 cassava variety planted on the same plot of land. In fact, the TC11 cassava cuttings germinated well, the plants were large and 1m50 tall before they started to branch. After 10 months of planting, we harvested 20 tons of tubers. On February 23, 2012, my family continued to plant 8 sao".

Mr. Trinh Van Tham (in Thanh Ngoc commune) planted 8 sao of TC11 cassava variety and could not hide his joy: "When planting the new cassava variety, I thought it would not work because the hilly land was full of horse tooth gravel, and planted at the time when the weather started to get hot (late March 2011)... But when it came time to harvest, when pulling up each bush of cassava, each bush had 12-14 tubers, while the old variety only had 8-10 tubers/bush. The average yield was about 1.9-2 tons/sao".

Ms. Nguyen Thi Hoa, residing in Thanh My commune, also excitedly said: "My family planted the TC11 cassava variety on an area of 4 sao of alluvial land for testing. Compared to the KM 94 variety currently being grown in the commune, under the same farming conditions, the TC11 variety has a much higher yield of 6-7 quintals/sao. In the next crop, I planted the new variety on the entire area of alluvial land (7 sao) of my family"...

According to Mr. Tran Dinh Binh, Head of the Thanh Chuong District Agricultural and Fisheries Extension Station, the TC11 high-yield cassava variety has initially proven to be a potential cassava variety, with a yield 17-20% higher than the control cassava variety KM 94, and is suitable for different soil types. Although households have not invested in fertilizers according to regulations and planted late, the yield still reaches around 50 tons/ha.

In 2012, Thanh Chuong district decided to cooperate with Thanh Chuong Cassava Starch Factory to continue to conduct a pilot model in 6 key cassava growing communes of the district (Thanh Nho, Thanh Hoa, Thanh Lam, Thanh Duc, Thanh Thuy, Thanh Xuan) with an area of 23 hectares. The initial success of the pilot model is a solid scientific basis for the province to decide to introduce the high-yield cassava variety TC11 into the structure of local industrial cassava varieties.
