Establishment of the Vietnam Women Intellectuals Association

On the morning of March 8, at the Center for Women and Development (20 Thuy Khue, Hanoi), the Congress to establish the Vietnam Women Intellectuals Association, term I (2011-2016), took place.

Attending the Congress were Mr. Nguyen Thien Nhan - Deputy Prime Minister; Ms. Nguyen Thi Doan - Vice President; Ms. Nguyen Thi Binh - former Vice President - Chairwoman of the Vietnam Kovalevskaia Award Committee, along with many ministries, departments, branches and organizations.

More than 200 delegates representing Vietnamese female intellectuals of all professions, regions, and ages from all over the country attended the congress.

The Vietnam Association of Intellectual Women was established to gather and unite intellectual women with the aim of supporting and promoting the capacity and role of intellectual women in intellectual activities and improving their qualifications; contributing to the cause of national development. By 2020, women will have the educational, professional and technical qualifications to meet the requirements of industrialization, modernization and international economic integration; have jobs, and have significantly improved material, cultural and spiritual life; and be equal in all fields.

Speaking at the Congress, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan warmly congratulated the launch of the Vietnam Association of Women Intellectuals; affirming that female intellectuals have been actively contributing to policy making, training human resources, improving people's knowledge, nurturing talents, creating and composing valuable scientific, cultural and artistic works...

In order for the Association to become a common home for Vietnamese female intellectuals, contributing to promoting progress and gender equality in society, the Deputy Prime Minister suggested that the Association should have support policies so that female intellectuals, especially young female intellectuals, have the opportunity to study and continue to improve their qualifications.

The Association needs to play a leading role in researching issues of national significance, especially issues of Vietnamese women and families. The Association will also be an important and effective channel for providing advice to the Party and State on issues of national development in general and women's development in particular.

Speaking at the congress, Head of the campaign committee to establish the Vietnam Women Intellectuals Association, Professor of Science Pham Thi Tran Chau emphasized: “We realize that striving for gender equality, especially in intellectual activities, is the responsibility and conscience of everyone, first of all of women themselves. Especially those female intellectuals who have been trained and have achieved success.”

After the opening session, the congress focused on discussing and approving the direction of activities and the Association's Charter for the 2011-2016 term; at the same time, elected the Executive Committee and Inspection Committee for the first term of the Vietnam Association of Women Intellectuals.
