Vietnamese dragon fruit gets special access to the US market
Starting from August 20, dragon fruit is the only fruit from Vietnam that is allowed to be exported directly to the US for irradiation, before being brought to high-end supermarkets in this country...
According to Mr. Nguyen Huu Dat, Director of the Post-Import Plant Quarantine Center II, this is something the US has never done before with any Vietnamese fruit or vegetable. After a period of opening and expanding the US market, up to now, Vietnamese dragon fruit has established a great reputation in the world's most demanding market. That also proves that our country's dragon fruit has created great trust in the US market regarding pest control and food safety.
Mr. Dat also believes that this is also an opportunity to promote and expand the market for Vietnamese dragon fruit, because when the US expands import conditions, it means that many other countries will follow suit.
Previously, the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) granted a certificate of trademark protection to “Binh Thuan Dragon Fruit” with the protected trademark including the words “Binh Thuan”, “Dragon Fruit” and the image of dragon fruit. The trademark protection in the US contributes to helping Binh Thuan dragon fruit gain a firmer foothold in this demanding market, while protecting the prestige and reputation of Binh Thuan dragon fruit – Vietnam.
Thus, along with the US granting a certificate of protection for the certification mark for "Binh Thuan Dragon Fruit", this act of "opening the door" for quarantine for Vietnamese dragon fruit is helping domestic farmers and businesses to be more excited and confident in the path of clean production (GAP).
Meanwhile, in the “holy land” of dragon fruit in Binh Thuan, although it is in the main harvest season, the selling price is increasing. Compared to last year, the price of dragon fruit in the main season is 30-40% higher (type 1 is 13,000 VND/kg, type 2 is 6,000 VND/kg). With this selling price, on average, people earn 600,000 VND per dragon fruit pillar, while 1 hectare has about 1,300 pillars, equivalent to 700-800 million VND.
Many farmers explained that there are many reasons for the sharp increase in dragon fruit prices, such as the expanding export market, increased reputation and quality, causing the selling price to increase accordingly.
