Overcoming family pressure, doing many jobs
Cham was a student at Fort Street High School in Sydney, Australia. Now, while watching his friends eagerly search for a university, he was at a loss for what to do.
“I started thinking, ‘What is the purpose of all these subjects?’ Then I started to neglect my studies,” he said.
Cham was a bright student, but he scored only 49.45 on his first attempt and 51.9 when he retook the exam the following year. He admits his results came as a shock, but it made him realise that a degree was not for him.
But his parents were disappointed as they had expected him to become a doctor or a lawyer. His parents always compared him to the children of his friends when they entered university with promising plans for the future.
Mr. Cham said he was under a lot of pressure from his parents to study. “I felt like I had lost everything. I thought I didn’t have a college degree. I was facing this big, bad world. I had to decide to do something important with my life,” he said.
So instead of going to college, Cham tried to do many different jobs. At first, he did an administrative job at a bank, then he worked at a casino, then he became a fitness trainer. Later he sold books at book seminars.
Mr. Cham believes that with each different job, he learned a little more. For example, at the bank, he realized that he would not have the opportunity to advance. Gradually, he realized that business was his passion and he began to have the idea of opening a company.
He and a friend founded the company - an education and training business in 2009. It helps young entrepreneurs realize their dreams. It was one of the fastest growing companies in Australia last year, reaching a turnover of 3 million Australian dollars.
Become a millionaire by choosing the right career you love
Talking about his decision to drop out of college, Mr. Cham shared: I have many friends who studied accounting and information technology only to find themselves having to start over many years after graduation. Or some people have to accept a life with a job they don't like.
He compares finding a suitable job to finding love. And he advises high school students to think carefully about their future before choosing to go to university, which is not cheap.
“If you really want to be a doctor or a lawyer, you have to go to college,” he said. “But if you want to start your own business, college is not the only way.”
He said many students choose their majors and degrees based solely on their grades, rarely thinking about what career they want to pursue in the future. After a period of studying, they feel uninterested and lose motivation to study.
“Take time to do what really makes you happy,” is the advice Mr. Cham wants to give to young people.
