Scientists have discovered a cave complex in Türkiye that may be the largest ancient underground city ever known.

The cave complex lies at a depth of approximately 113 meters, beneath a hilltop fortress near Nevsehir province, Türkiye. According to National Geographic, the ancient city in Nevsehir was discovered two years ago when workers identified tunnel entrances and underground chambers during demolition work for a new housing project.

Here, scientists found a complete settlement with kitchens, a winemaking factory, water channels, a chapel, ventilation shafts, etc. They believe this site may date back to the Eastern Roman Empire.

Previously, researchers had discovered the Derinkuyu area in Türkiye's Cappadocia region, which was large enough to accommodate at least 20,000 people. In this case, experts believe the city in Nevsehir is about one-third larger than Derinkuyu.

NBC News reported yesterday that the housing project has been moved to the suburbs, with Nevsehir officials hoping to transform the underground city into the world's largest ancient park.

"We even plan to reopen the underground churches. All of this makes us very excited," said Hasan Ünver, mayor of Nevsehir province.
