The world's first floating city off the Pacific coast
An American company plans to start building the world's first floating city off the coast of Polynesia in the South Pacific in 2019.
The Seasteading Institute, a US company, has just signed an agreement with the government of the Polynesian islands in the South Pacific to build the world's first floating city off the coast of this area, ABC reported.
French Polynesia is an overseas territory of France, made up of several island groups of the larger Polynesian archipelago. It is facing many threats due to rising sea levels. The Seasteading Institute believes that building floating cities could be one of the solutions to this problem.
“Many parts of the world, including the islands of Polynesia, are threatened by rising sea levels. Floating islands would allow people to live within their own national boundaries, without having to move to another country,” said Randolph Hencken, executive director of the Seasteading Institute.
The Seasteading Institute has spent five years researching how to build a permanent floating city. After signing an agreement with the Polynesian government, they hope to start construction in 2019.
