Vinh City: Garbage all over the markets
(Baonghean) - Vinh City is the location where most of the wholesale markets and small retail markets in Nghe An province are concentrated. Besides the bustling trading activities, the situation of people littering in front of the market gates and on the roads around the market still occurs every day.
In Vinh city, there are currently 26 large and small markets. In addition to Vinh market, which is a wholesale market, the rest are mostly retail markets selling all kinds of goods. Walking around the markets, it is easy to see all kinds of garbage from organic waste (vegetables, banana peels, cake wrappers, etc.) to inorganic waste such as nylon, plastic bags, etc. Garbage is not only found in the markets but also overflows onto the sidewalks, roads, and in front of the market gates.

People sweep trash out onto Nguyen Trung Ngan street (Truong Thi ward, Vinh city) |
In front of Cua Bac market (located on Le Loi street), there are always piles of garbage scattered all over the street. All kinds of garbage, from crushed vegetables, rotten fruits to packaging... are scattered haphazardly, scattered over a long stretch of road. Next to that are stalls selling pho, porridge, breakfast food, leftover food and dishwashing liquid that are dumped straight into the sewer. Ms. Nguyen Thi Ha - Owner of a vegetable stall at Cua Bac market said: We do business here every day, we know that littering on the street causes environmental pollution, but in a narrow market, we have to take the garbage out onto the street.
Sharing the same situation as Cua Bac market, at Quan Lau market (Truong Thi ward, Vinh city), environmental pollution due to waste is also quite common. Quan Lau market was built in 1996, with an area of 2,800m2, including 1 main hall and 1 secondary hall, 162 business households. Because the market is small and narrow, while the business and trading needs of local people are large, every day hundreds of households encroach on the sidewalk of Nguyen Trung Ngan street to sell items from green vegetables to meat, fish, and seafood.
During the trading process, no matter how much garbage there is, these people conveniently throw it straight onto the street. Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Hoa - living on Nguyen Trung Ngan Street, Truong Thi Ward shared: In the market, there are many types of garbage, people take them out to the street to collect. There are many types of garbage such as chicken and duck waste, fish and seafood waste dumped haphazardly onto the street, which is very unsanitary. Sometimes in the summer, when it is hot, the smell is very unpleasant. In the winter, when it rains heavily, the garbage stagnates and gives off a foul smell, there are many flies, affecting the lives of people around.

Garbage is everywhere in front of the side gate of Quan Lau market, Vinh city. |
Mr. Tran Quang Hung - Deputy Head of Quan Lau Market Management Board said: Due to the nature of the small, narrow market, it is not possible to build a waste collection area in the market. Therefore, for nearly 5 years now, the market has planned a waste collection point right in front of the western side gate, located on Nguyen Trung Ngan Street. Many households living nearby also arbitrarily dump household waste near the market. We also regularly propagate and mobilize people to dump waste in the right place, at the right time. However, due to the nature of the market operating from early morning, the amount of waste generated in the market is very large, so the situation of widespread dumping of waste on Nguyen Trung Ngan Street still recurs.
In order to make Vinh city increasingly clean, beautiful and civilized, it is extremely necessary to arrange and build sanitary waste collection points at the markets. Therefore, it is necessary to soon take measures to end the situation of littering, causing pollution and unhygienic conditions at the markets in the city.
