Discussion on the Project to compile "Vietnam Encyclopedia"
On October 16, the Vietnam Institute of Lexicography and Encyclopedia held a workshop on "Building a Project to Compile the Vietnam Encyclopedia".
The construction of the "Vietnam Encyclopedia" to introduce the most basic knowledge about the country, people, history, society, culture, science and technology of Vietnam past and present.
Associate Professor Dr. Pham Hung Viet, Director of the Institute of Lexicography and Encyclopedia of Vietnam, affirmed that "Vietnam Encyclopedia" reflects the development of the country. In order to optimally promote internal strength and determine the most appropriate development path for each country, it is necessary to first understand clearly, fully and comprehensively about one's own country.
Through the general Encyclopedia, the development level of each country will be reflected quite truthfully and fully.
"Vietnam Encyclopedia" reflects the development of regions and communities, contributes to improving knowledge, and is a self-study tool for all members of society. Therefore, the knowledge level of members of society will depend directly on the development of the Encyclopedia system that is being popularized in society.
During the discussion, delegates said that the Project to compile "Vietnam Encyclopedia" needs to clarify some contents; supplement and edit some issues appropriately to ensure progress and success.
Many scientists have affirmed that in order to simultaneously compile the volumes of the "Vietnamese Encyclopedia", both to shorten the compilation time and to soon have an Encyclopedia of various disciplines and interdisciplinary, the method chosen for compilation is the decentralized compilation method. The volumes by discipline and interdisciplinary will be compiled simultaneously, after there is a consensus on the general structure of the "Vietnamese Encyclopedia".
Prof. Dr. Trinh Xuan Hoai, Institute of Applied Physics and Scientific Equipment, said that in order for the work to be carried out smoothly and properly, it is necessary to have a set of tools and software to manage the compilation process and create electronic manuscripts so that comments and edits can be made quickly.
Therefore, many opinions suggest that the time to compile "Vietnam Encyclopedia" should only be 5 - 7 years, to be completed by 2020, instead of the time as in the project which is 12 years, from 2013 to 2024.
