The AU-220M turret that Russia has just introduced in the UAE is said to be compatible with the PT-76 tank hull that Vietnam is using.
At the IDEX-2015 military exhibition, the Russian defense company introduced for the first time the new generation turret module AU-220M. |
They immediately won their first contract with the UAE – to equip the Enigma armored personnel carrier produced by the UAE's Emirates Military Technology Group (EDT). |
The AU-220M turret was developed by the Burevestnik Central Research Center of the famous tank manufacturer Uralvagonzavod (UVZ) for both new and improved armored vehicles. The module is equipped with a 57mm automatic gun and a 7.62mm machine gun mounted on a remote-controlled platform. |
Notably, according to the Army-Technology website, this new generation AU-220M turret can be equipped with PT-76 amphibious light tanks produced since the 1950s, which Vietnam is using in large numbers in its Army and Navy armored forces. |
Current PT-76 tanks are almost all equipped with old-style turrets armed with 76.2mm D-56TM guns with an effective range of 1,500m. |
PT-76 - This "gun boat" was exported to nearly 30 countries, including Vietnam in 1960. Vietnam was one of the first countries to receive the PT-76, but only used them in combat 8 years after being put into service. |
Crew of 3, main firepower includes 76.2 mm cannon, 7.62 mm coaxial machine gun. Can be reinforced with 12.7 mm anti-aircraft gun. The vehicle has quite thin armor, about 20 mm in the nose and turret, so the protection ability is weak against armor-piercing or anti-tank bullets. |
The reality of war shows that the PT-76 is very resistant to single-use anti-tank rockets М72. In Vietnam, the PT-76 tank participated in many campaigns such as the Route 9 Southern Laos campaign, the An Loc campaign and coordinated services in many major campaigns. |
The Vietnamese army also used these tanks during the conflict in Cambodia. And today, according to various estimates, the Vietnamese army has nearly 300 of these amphibious tanks. It is difficult to say how many of them are in combat condition, but a part of the PT-76s are used by the army and marines. |
Currently, the Vietnamese army has also upgraded the PT-76 amphibious tank, such as replacing the machine gun system, upgrading the engine, and the tank's armor system. (Synthesis of KT, DVO) |
