Found the body of the world's rarest animal in Vietnam
On May 12, the World Wildlife Fund in Vietnam (WWF Vietnam) said that the body of a Javan rhino was discovered in Cat Tien National Park (Lam Dong).
According to WWF Vietnam, the Javan rhinoceros is the world’s largest and rarest mammal. Currently, authorities have not yet determined the number of Javan rhinoceros individuals surviving in Vietnam.
The carcass of the Javan rhino was discovered by locals on April 29. A forest patrol team was immediately dispatched to the scene. Here, the rangers collected almost the entire skeleton of the rhino, weighing 52.5 kg.

Although no traces of traps or death throes due to hunting were found, the tip of the rhino's snout had knife marks and was no longer intact. Therefore, experts believe that it is likely that this rhino was killed by poachers for its horn.
Currently, Cat Tien National Park is coordinating with the legal sector of Lam Dong province to investigate the cause of the rhino's death and search for the lost horn.
In Vietnam, the trade and use of any part of a rare animal such as the Javan rhinoceros is illegal and can result in imprisonment and fines.
According to WWF Vietnam, Vietnam's Javan rhinoceros (Rhinoceros sondaicus annamiticus) is one of only two rhino populations left on earth. |
