Post-Tet Market: Abundant Goods, Stable Prices

February 25, 2015 09:56

(Baonghean) - After the Tet holidays, many markets in Vinh city have resumed operations. The good news for consumers is that prices of most items are quite stable.

Unlike previous years, after Tet this year, goods are abundant, there is no big fluctuation in selling prices compared to before and during Tet. From the 3rd day of Tet, markets in Vinh City resumed operations. Goods for sale are mainly fresh food and green vegetables... Surveyed at the markets, beef tenderloin is currently at 280,000 - 300,000 VND/kg, pork is priced at 100,000 - 120,000 VND/kg, chicken is 130,000 VND/kg; Vegetables 3,000 - 4,000 VND/bunch, kohlrabi 2,000 - 3,000 VND/root, green beans 15,000 VND/kg, tomatoes 15,000 VND/kg, broccoli 12,000 - 15,000 VND/bud, chayote 5,000 VND/kg, water spinach 5,000 VND/bunch, carrots 10,000 VND/kg... According to the explanation of the traders, they did not buy much because the first days of the year sold slowly, because the number of people buying on the days before Tet was quite large, so almost every family still had a large amount of food in stock. As for green vegetables, because this year the weather was favorable, the vegetables grew well, making the supply abundant. In addition, more and more families are growing their own green vegetables, so there is no shortage, and the selling price is not pushed up as high as in previous years.

Currently, seafood products are not sold much in the markets, there are only boiled and grilled freshwater and sea fish; carp costs from 80,000 - 100,000 VND/kg, grass carp 70,000 - 80,000 VND/kg, snakehead fish 90,000 - 100,000 VND/kg, grilled mackerel 250,000 - 280,000 VND/kg... According to many retailers, after days of eating meat and greasy foods, consumers prefer to choose seafood to change their menu. That is the reason why this item increased slightly after Tet. Going to the market at the beginning of the new year, many housewives were quite satisfied when most items did not increase in price suddenly. Ms. Tran Thi Loan in Hamlet 16, Hung Loc Commune (Vinh City) happily said: "I thought that before Tet, everything would be expensive, but when I went to the market, I saw that this year the increase was not significant, at an acceptable level, so I felt secure in shopping."

The fruit market such as oranges, mangoes, watermelons, grapefruits, apples... outside the market gates and stalls along the streets have been on sale since the third day of Tet, but purchasing power is not high. During Tet, fruit prices increased due to traders "pushing up prices", such as green-skinned grapefruits at 75,000 - 80,000 VND/kg, dragon fruit at 60,000 - 70,000 VND/kg, watermelons from 50,000 - 70,000 VND/fruit... Many people discovered that kumquats and apples do not spoil for a long time because they are soaked in chemicals, so they are afraid to buy fruit for Tet, causing a backlog of goods. Beer and wine are always high during Tet, especially this year when the weather is warm and sunny, but the price of beer and wine during Tet At Mui increased slightly due to low purchasing power. After Tet, stalls still have "surplus" of many items, so stores open early in the hope of serving the needs of going to pagodas and people visiting to wish a happy new year. But according to dealers, this year purchasing power is very weak, revenue is insignificant; currently selling prices have not changed compared to the time during Tet.

To serve the consumption needs of people after Tet, from the 4th day of Tet, markets in the districts have also started operating again. Through a survey, the prices of goods at the beginning of the year were kept stable, even fresh food products decreased slightly compared to the time before Tet... At Hieu market - Thai Hoa town, beef tenderloin costs 240,000 VND/kg, hen meat costs 130,000 VND/kg, rooster meat costs 140,000 VND/kg, pork butt costs 100,000 VND/kg, lean pork tenderloin costs 110,000 VND/kg (selling price is 10,000 - 20,000 VND/kg lower than before Tet); vegetables and tubers of all kinds have higher prices of 1,000 - 2,000 VND/kg compared to the day. At Gay market - Linh Son commune (Anh Son district), some items that had a slight price increase near Tet are now gradually returning to normal; the price of beef tenderloin is 240,000 - 250,000 VND/kg, chicken is 120,000 - 130,000 VND/kg, lean pork tenderloin is 110,000 VND/kg... Unlike previous years, after Tet At Mui this year, purchasing power is low, the quantity of goods is large, so the selling price has stabilized right after 3 days of Tet...

Right from the morning of the second day of Tet, when many families were still going out for spring and meeting friends, many fashion clothing stores on Dang Thai Than and Nguyen Van Cu streets opened their stores to "bring luck" at the beginning of the year. According to the explanation of some traders here, they mainly opened their stores to choose a good day in the hope of bringing good luck in the new year. To serve the shopping needs of customers at the beginning of the new year, after 2 days off (the first and second days of Tet), starting from the morning of the third day of Tet, major supermarkets in Vinh City such as Metro and Big C reopened. Right in the first days of sales of the new year, at Big C supermarket, there were more than 2,000 items with discounts from 5 - 45% (including dry food, fresh food, frozen food, drinks, ready-to-eat food, etc.). In addition, Metro Supermarket will also launch the program "Come to Metro without worrying about shortage of goods" with hundreds of items discounted from 5 - 50%. Actual records show that at this time, prices of goods at supermarkets are stable, the number of shoppers is not much.

In general, the market in Vinh City and districts after Tet has abundant goods, slow purchasing power, no sudden price fluctuations and most have returned to normal levels, except for some items with low supply and still high prices such as beef, seafood, etc. Through a survey of shopping demand after Tet, most people are satisfied with current prices and shopping activities are at a low level.
