Since the failed coup in mid-July, Türkiye has removed more than 80,000 civil servants and arrested many of them for complicity with the coup plotters.
Among the security personnel eliminated in the latest purge were 323 from the gendarmerie and police. In addition to the security personnel, 2,346 academics from universities were also fired. These academics were said to have had writings linked to the US-based cleric Fethullah Gulen, who President Erdogan blames for the coup.
Some 3,300 judicial officials were also dismissed, leaving Türkiye with a labor shortage in its legal institutions and a growing prison population. To address the problem, Türkiye is considering inviting retired judges and prosecutors to temporarily return to work within the next two months.
