Girl cannot eat rice for 15 years
From childhood until now, 15 years old, Nguyen Thi Lan (Quang Binh) only ate meat and eggs, could not eat rice because she vomited everything.
Lan's mother said that in a family of 4 children, the first 3 children ate normally, only Lan was different. Her pregnancy with Lan went normally except for the first 3 months of morning sickness from the smell of rice and fish.
When Lan was little, her mother cooked white porridge for her to eat, but she could only eat it for 30 minutes before she threw up. Since then, she has never eaten rice or any other cereal. Lan's main foods are meat and eggs. She can eat up to a kilo of meat at a time, especially fatty meat, and eats an average of 4-5 eggs a day. Even though she doesn't eat rice, she still develops normally like other children her age.
According to doctors, Lan has a food allergy. When she eats starch like rice or wheat, even a very small amount can cause allergic reactions such as: skin rash, runny nose, itchy eyes, hives or even anaphylactic shock leading to death...
It is estimated that 1-3% of adults and 4-6% of children have food allergies. However, this rate is difficult to assess because different studies use different methods and the manifestations of food allergies also change with age.
Eggs and milk are the most common food allergens in infants and young children. This usually goes away as the child gets older. Shellfish (oysters, clams, etc.) are more likely to cause allergies in adults than in children, while peanut allergies are common in both groups.
