Vitamin D deficiency may impair language ability

Research results show that a child's development depends on the amount of vitamin D from the mother and it can affect the child's brain development.

ResearchersAustraliaMothers who are deficient in vitamin D during pregnancy are more likely to give birth to children with language difficulties, researchers have found. One in threeAustraliaare now considered vitamin D deficient.

Scientists from the Children's Health Research Charitable Institute atPerthanalyzed vitamin D levels in more than 740 pregnant women. They then tracked the development and behavior of the women's children until they were 17 years old.

The study's lead author, Andrew White, said the findings suggest that children's development depends on their mothers' vitamin D levels, and that vitamin D levels may influence their brain development. However, there was no link between vitamin D levels and children's behavioral and emotional problems.

Based on the initial research results, Australian scientists are continuing to study the possibility of supplementing vitamin D for pregnant women to reduce the risk of children having language difficulties./.
