The miners attacked the managers after not being paid a higher basic wage. In a fit of rage, the miners lost control and pushed a truck into Wu Shengzai, 50.

Two other Chinese managers were also injured in the clash at the Collum mine, about 300 km from Zambia's capital Lusaka. They were airlifted to Lusaka for medical treatment.

Zambian Deputy Labour Minister Rayford Mbulu said Labour Minister Fackson Shamenda visited the mine to assess the situation. Details of the investigation have not been released.

According to Mr. Mbulu, there is always hostility between workers and managers at the mine. The minersZambiaand Chinese managers often have tense confrontations. In 2010, Chinese managers shot and wounded at least 13 miners during a protest over low wages.

In July 2012, the government led by the Patriotic Front PartyZambiaThe government has announced a basic wage increase, requiring a minimum wage of $230 a month for workers in areas such as the mines. Miners in Collum are paid only about $150 a month.
