Türkiye arrests German woman after coup attempt

AFP reported that on August 5, Germany confirmed that a German citizen had been arrested in Türkiye in a crackdown by Ankara authorities on suspected supporters of cleric Fethullah Gulen after last month's failed coup.

The Sueddeutsche Zeitung newspaper said the woman was arrested several days ago, after books were discovered at her home that suggested she was linked to the Gulen movement or was a member of it.

The German Foreign Ministry confirmed the authenticity of the information published by Sueddeutsche Zeitung, but did not provide further details.

According to Sueddeutsche Zeitung, the German Embassy in Ankara tried to contact the arrested German woman, but without success.

The Turkish government has accused cleric Gulen of ordering the July 15 coup to overthrow President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and has carried out a widespread raid targeting people associated with the US-based preacher./.
