The press office of the President of Ukraine said on September 18 that during his visit to Canada, President Petro Poroshenko met with the Ukrainian community in Ottawa and expressed his gratitude for their contributions to the development of an independent and powerful Ukraine.

Mr. Poroshenko announced that the Verkhovna Rada (Parliament) of Ukraine and the European Parliament (EP) have approved the Association Agreement between Ukraine and the European Union (EU).

"This is a farewell to the Soviet Union. No one and nothing can stop us on the path of civilizing the development of our country," he stressed.

Mr Poroshenko also noted that the war cannot be an excuse for not carrying out reforms. He said: "We need to overcome corruption and elect a new parliament for Ukraine. We need to get rid of the fifth column (underground forces) in parliament... We will win this war because this is a real fight for independence, peace on Ukrainian soil."/.
