According to Live Science, the team of experts has not yet determined the name, age or occupation of the research subject. This is one of hundreds of bodies with intact hair found at a resting place near the ancient city of Amarna in Egypt.
The woman was not mummified, but simply wrapped in a mat. When archaeologists found her body, they discovered that her hair had many tightly woven extensions in different lengths.
"The hair was probably styled after death, before a person was buried. However, it is likely that similar hairstyles or the use of hair extensions were quite common in everyday life during this period," said Jolanda Bos, a researcher on the Amarna project.
Fat or oil may have been used to style hair, such as to help it stay tightly braided after death. At the excavation site, the team discovered reddish-blonde hair on a woman, possibly dyed with henna.
The ancient city of Amarna, the site excavated in the study, was built as Egypt's new capital between 1353 and 1335 BC. The team hopes the discovery will provide important research information about this period of history.
