Learning more from the teachers, we learned that most of the people on the list were former teachers at public schools. During the time when they had not yet retired, they had signed a contract to teach by class at Nguyen Truong To Secondary School (now a private school). After the teachers retired, they became full-time teachers here with a "fixed-term contract", signed once a year, usually starting from the beginning of the school year (September) to the end of the school year (May).


The contract signing usually begins about 1 month after the school year begins. Although he has not been an official teacher for the past 22 years (since the establishment of Nguyen Truong To School), Mr. Phan Van Ky has become accustomed to the new school year but the school has not renewed his contract. Therefore, when he received the notice that he would have to stop teaching this school year, Mr. Ky and many other teachers were very surprised.


Regarding this incident, during a meeting with us, Ms. Hoang Thi My Thien, Vice Principal, admitted that the Board of Directors had made hasty decisions. The reason for this action, Ms. Thien said: The reduction of teachers had been considered by the Board of Directors since the end of the 2010-2011 school year, because in this school year, according to the approved plan of the Department of Education and Training, the school was only allowed to enroll 13 classes with 45 students/class, a decrease of 126 students compared to the previous school year.

Among the teachers who are teaching, we are forced to prioritize permanent teachers (teachers who have signed long-term contracts with the school) and young, healthy teachers... In Ms. Huong's case, the school has only just put it forward for consideration and will create conditions if she wishes to continue teaching at the school after her maternity leave.


Thus, the termination of contracts with teachers with long-term contributions should be carried out step by step by the school and should not be rushed, especially when the Principal has only received the appointment notice for 3 days. The new Board of Directors of Nguyen Truong To High School should consider this a lesson in management.
