Information about the case of a doctor operating on a newborn baby's head

On June 5, Dr. Bui Xuan Thanh, Deputy Director of Lam Dong General Hospital, said: The Hospital's Board of Directors has officially responded in writing to the family of Mr. Ho Tien Phuc (30 years old), residing in Phat Chi village, Tram Hanh commune, Da Lat city (Lam Dong) about the fact that Dr. Nguyen Hai Le, Deputy Head of the Obstetrics Department, while performing a cesarean section on Ms. Tran Thi Thanh Lan (29 years old, Mr. Phuc's wife), caused injury to the newborn, causing discontent among the mother's family.

According to the response from Lam Dong General Hospital, the pregnant woman Tran Thi Thanh Lan had premature rupture of membranes, so the fetus's head was close to the head of the uterus. When the doctor used scissors to separate the uterine muscles, the tip of the scissors came into contact with the fetus's scalp, causing a 2cm long wound on the ear, 0.5mm deep, with bleeding, but no blood loss.

In a reply letter, Lam Dong General Hospital said that when the incident occurred, the doctor had sutured a stitch with absorbable thread, without anesthesia, and the baby did not cry. The wound did not affect the baby's health because the wound was very shallow and there was no blood loss. The CT-Scanner results showed: white matter cerebral edema, widening of the large basin, no abnormalities in the skull bones, no abnormalities in the soft tissue of the skull. Lam Dong General Hospital determined that the baby's serious condition was due to a congenital brain disease, the cause of which could be due to slow fetal development in the womb.

According to Dr. Bui Xuan Thanh, after the incident of cutting into the head of Mr. Ho Tien Phuc's child, Dr. Nguyen Hai Le directly informed the pregnant woman Tran Thi Thanh Lan and explained the above injury. The pregnant woman was 37 weeks pregnant. During the birth, her water broke prematurely, and the obstetricians performed a cesarean section to deliver the baby.

The newborn weighed more than 1.9 kg in poor health, cyanosis, respiratory failure, and was transferred to the Pediatrics Department. Through a CT scan of the brain, the doctor discovered that the baby had extensive white matter edema and was treated, fed completely intravenously, supported with mechanical respiration, and had a small serum tumor on the head.

According to Dr. Thanh, 20 days after the surgery, the newborn's health has improved but the doctors are still closely monitoring his health and treating him wholeheartedly. For Dr. Nguyen Hai Le, the wound was caused by a technical error that could have occurred during the surgery, and Dr. Nguyen Hai Le had to learn from his experience and was disqualified from the competition.

Meanwhile, Mr. Ho Tien Phuc and his family were very upset and believed that the Board of Directors of Lam Dong General Hospital had not taken any positive action, had not directly accepted responsibility, compensated and apologized to the family. The fact that Dr. Nguyen Hai Le directly explained to the pregnant woman Tran Thi Thanh Lan was dishonest, deliberately covering up the surgeon's mistake. The truth is that Dr. Nguyen Hai Le did not inform the family about the incident, put a cap on the newborn's head and put him in an incubator, deliberately concealing the truth.

Three days after the surgery to deliver the baby, Mr. Phuc accidentally discovered a wound on the newborn's head. He then used his phone to take a picture of the wound on the newborn's head.

Previously, on May 14, Ms. Tran Thi Thanh Lan was transferred by her family to the Obstetrics Department, Lam Dong General Hospital to give birth. Doctor Nguyen Hai Le performed surgery on request (service surgery) for the mother Lan. During the process of delivering the baby, the doctor cut into the scalp, causing injury to Mr. Ho Tien Phuc's child.

Up to now, 20 days after the surgery, the baby is still being nourished intravenously in an incubator, breathing with a machine at the Pediatrics Department, Lam Dong General Hospital in a very weak health condition.
