(Baonghean) -While in many localities in the district, rural waste treatment is a difficult problem, the pilot model of waste classification pits at households organized by the Women's Union of Yen Thanh district and Hop Thanh commune in hamlet 3, Hop Thanh commune is really effective.
The family of Ms. Le Thi Thom in Hamlet 3 is one of 119 households selected by the district and commune women's association to pilot the household waste classification and treatment model since the beginning of July 2012. With a family of 4, previously all the waste in her family's daily activities such as fruit peels, packaging, bottles, and even leftover food... was collected and then dumped in the street trash can, waiting for the environmental sanitation team to take it away for treatment. However, since being supported to build a waste classification pit and instructed on how to classify waste, it has not only created fertilizer for plants but also helped protect the environment inside and outside the family. Ms. Thom said: "Since being supported to build a waste classification pit and being informed about how to classify and treat the environment, I have separated plastic bags, bottles and solid waste into separate categories. What can be burned is burned for treatment, the rest is brought out for the collection team to collect...."
Hamlet 3 used to have the largest amount of waste discharged into the environment in Hop Thanh commune. In the face of this situation, in early July 2012, the district women's association coordinated with the commune women's association to organize a pilot model of building and putting into use waste sorting pits in households. A waste pit costs 120,000 VND, of which the district supports 50%, the commune supports 25%, and the rest is contributed by the people. 119 households in the hamlet were selected for the pilot, up to now, 95% of the sorting pits have been put into use and have been really effective. Previously, the commune's garbage collection team collected garbage once a week and each time there were 2 full garbage trucks, but now, they only have to collect garbage once every 2 weeks and each time there is only about 1 garbage truck. Since the model was implemented, people's awareness of participating in environmental sanitation has also been raised, the situation of people dumping garbage on the streets has decreased significantly, the air is no longer polluted by the stench of rotten food waste, the village roads and alleys are cleaner than before, in addition, organic waste is also treated as fertilizer for plants. In order to further raise people's awareness in waste classification and treatment, the Women's Union of Hop Thanh commune also regularly organizes inspections, urges, reminds people and at the same time strengthens propaganda so that all people are aware of the important role of waste classification and treatment right at their households.
The model of building a pit to collect and classify waste has been highly effective in Hamlet 3, Hop Thanh Commune when people's domestic waste has been collected and treated in a systematic manner and ensured environmental hygiene. From the effectiveness of this model, it is thought that the relevant departments and agencies should replicate it to other areas in the district to promptly solve the current increasing situation of rural waste.
