Recall of Similac GainPlus products contaminated with bacteria

On August 3, the Food Safety Department - Ministry of Health received a notice of voluntary recall of Similac GainPlus Eye-Q formula food for children aged 1-3 years old, 400g and 900g boxes of Abbott Company, produced under contract in New Zealand by Fonterra Company, contaminated with Clostridium Botulinum, imported into Vietnam.

On August 3, the Food Safety Department - Ministry of Health received a notice of voluntary recall of Similac GainPlus Eye-Q formula food for children aged 1-3 years old, 400g and 900g boxes of Abbott Company, produced under contract in New Zealand by Fonterra Company, contaminated with Clostridium Botulinum, imported into Vietnam.

Earlier on the same day, the Food Safety Department received information from the New Zealand Embassy in Vietnam announcing that the New Zealand Ministry of Primary Industries discovered that infant formula products containing Whey Protein Concentration produced by Fonterra New Zealand were contaminated with Clostridium Botulinum and exported to Vietnam, China, Australia and Saudi Arabia.

Among them, there are products imported to Vietnam by 3A Nutrition Limited Company, address: 72-74 Nguyen Thi Minh Khai, District 3, Ho Chi Minh City, on June 17, 2013 and July 3, 2013.

Immediately after receiving the information, the Food Safety Department contacted 3A Nutrition Company Limited and the Abbott Laboratories SA Representative Office in Vietnam to request a specific report on the import of the above product.

On the same day, the Food Safety Department received a report from the Abbott Laboratories SA Representative Office in Vietnam about the import and voluntary recall of this product from the market.

According to the report of the Representative Office of Abbott Laboratories SA in Vietnam, the imported product is Similac GainPlus Eye-Q formula food for children aged 1-3 years old in 400g and 900g boxes of Abbott Company, manufactured under contract in New Zealand by Fonterra Company.

Product lots that may be contaminated with Clostridium Botulinum bacteria include 2564G54114, 2564G54115, 2564G54116, 2564G54117, 2564G54118, 2565G54118, 2565G54119, 2566G54119, 2567G54119, 2567G54120.

The above product has been granted a Certificate of Conformity with Food Safety Regulations No. 6050/2012/ATTP-XNCB dated November 30, 2012 by the Department of Food Safety.

After receiving the report from the Representative Office of Abbott Laboratories SA in Vietnam, the Department of Food Safety issued Official Letter No. 1579/ATTP-SP dated August 3 to the Representative Office of Abbott in Vietnam requesting to immediately stop the circulation and recall related products on the market including the above batches of Similac GainPlus Eye-Q and report the results to the Department of Food Safety before August 9.

The Department also issued Official Dispatch No. 1580/ATTP-SP dated August 3 to the National Institute for Food Safety and Hygiene Control to conduct testing of the product Similac GainPlus Eye-Q Formula Food for Children 1-3 years old and report the results to the Department of Food Safety before August 6, 2013.

Currently, the Food Safety Department is continuously updating information from the WHO/FAO Food Safety Agency System (INFOSAN) and the New Zealand Embassy in Vietnam to notify consumers./.
