College valedictorian is just the first step
This year, Nghe An has had another “bumper crop” with (up to this point) 5 university valedictorians. We had a friendly chat with Dang Quang Huy (former student of class 12A2, Phan Boi Chau High School for the Gifted, Vinh City) - valedictorian of block D1, Hanoi Foreign Trade University with 28 points… - Up until now, after knowing the university entrance exam results for 2 weeks, what are your feelings and thoughts?
(Baonghean) -This year, Nghe An has had another “bumper crop” with (up to this point) 5 university valedictorians. We had a friendly chat with Dang Quang Huy (former student of class 12A2, Phan Boi Chau High School for the Gifted, Vinh City) - valedictorian of block D1, Hanoi Foreign Trade University with 28 points…
- Up until now, after knowing the university entrance exam results for 2 weeks, what are your feelings and thoughts?
- When I first received the news, I was very surprised and happy. I thought that the university valedictorian must be a very excellent person, with extremely "top" academic achievements. But when I became the valedictorian, I found that it was not entirely like that. Maybe with a national exam, students are required to be very good, but for university entrance exams, you need to have a solid grasp of the knowledge in the textbooks, and diligence is the deciding factor.
- So do you think you are hard-working?
- I am also diligent… normally. Actually, the important thing is to arrange my study time reasonably and scientifically. Besides class time and extra classes, I only study for 2-3 hours every evening, not like “studying all day and all night”. But once I start studying, I need to concentrate, not think and be distracted to be effective. Moreover, when it comes to grade 12, everyone is worried about studying well for the exam.
- I didn't have to study block D from the beginning, it wasn't until the end of grade 11 that I had a "turning point" from block A to block D. What do you think about this decision of mine?
- I think this was a right and timely decision of mine. That time was in the second semester of grade 11, I still had enough time to review for the university entrance exam with all 3 subjects: Math, Literature, English. Most importantly, I really like learning English. When you have passion, you have the motivation to study, like to study and study hard to achieve the best results. When making this decision, everyone was surprised, because after all, I had already gone 2/3 of the way of block A. But luckily, my parents still respected my decision, encouraged me to try. Math, I already had a foundation, English is my hobby, only Literature is something I had to learn from the beginning. Until the exam day, I was confident...
- In reality, many university valedictorians are from poor rural areas, and very few are students from well-off families, or from the city like you. What do you think about this, Huy?
- For those of you who are in difficult circumstances, those circumstances will be the motivation for you to rise up. My motivation is my mother. She has helped, guided and encouraged me a lot in my studies. Today's result is also my thank you to my mother, family, teachers, friends, who have always been with me for the past 12 years.
- Many valedictorians after entering university cannot maintain their "form" as at the starting point. How did you prepare to be a student?
- I will try to study and participate in extracurricular activities, school clubs to gain good knowledge, skills and practical experience. My dream is to become a good businessman, so being valedictorian of university is just my first step, there are many difficulties and challenges ahead. I also determined that studying in a university environment is completely different from that in high school, not just learning knowledge from books is enough...
- And if you have the opportunity to study abroad, will you go?
- Of course, it is a great opportunity to learn and practice. Moreover, to become a businessman and contribute to the country in the future, studying abroad is very good. In the near future, I will continue to practice my English skills so that if there is an opportunity, I can grasp it immediately.
- Thanks for this chat!
