On Monday (November 3), police found two bodies near a road in the city of Nuevo Leon, in the state of Nuevo Laredo, northern Mexico. The victims were identified as Captain Ricardo Cesar Nino Villareal, who is in charge of security in the northeastern state of Tamaulipas, along with his wife. At the scene, the car carrying Captain Ricardo and his wife was shot multiple times.
The Mexican states of Nuevo Laredo and Tamaulipas, which border the United States, have been the scene of deadly drug cartel killings. “The attack on Captain Ricardo and his wife took place on Saturday, and the car and the bodies were not discovered until Sunday,” police said. However, it was not until Monday that authorities were able to identify the victims.
In October, a police chief was shot dead in Michoac. Fifteen police chiefs have been killed in clashes between police and gangs in the state in the past three years. A local politician was also killed on Tuesday, according to Nuevo Laredo state prosecutors.
In the state of Tamaulipas, conflicts between criminal gangs are very common. For many months, Mexico has witnessed fierce battles between the Gulf Alliance, including the US and Mexico, against the Zetas criminal gangs to control the drug trade in this area.
Clashes between criminal gangs and government troops have pushed Mexico into a spiral of violence. It is known that the campaign against criminal gangs was launched by former Mexican President Felipe Calderon in December 2006. Up to now, the war has caused about 77,000 deaths.
