High income from rabbit farming
(Baonghean.vn) -Mr. Phan Van Hoang in hamlet 6, Trung Thanh commune (Yen Thanh) has been raising rabbits for sale for 5 years, bringing a fairly high income to his family.
According to the address, we went to Mr. Phan Van Hoang's rabbit breeding area. Mr. Hoang generously led us into a level 4 house, about 70 square meters wide, in which there were boxes made of wooden bars to hold rabbits. Each wooden box was about ½ square meter wide, stacked on top of each other. In each wooden box were breeding rabbits and litters of baby rabbits. Mr. Hoang said: Rabbits grow very quickly, thanks to their short reproductive cycle. Female rabbits are pregnant for only 30 days. Each female rabbit gives birth to 7 litters a year, each litter has 6-8 rabbits. My family currently has 40 mother rabbits, which means they give birth to about 2,000 rabbits each year. In addition to selling breeding rabbits to people in and outside the district, the couple also raises many for meat. The strongest market for rabbit meat is in the summer. Restaurants and hotels order in large quantities. The current price of rabbit meat is 100,000 VND/kg. Rabbit breeding 150 thousand VND/kg.
Talking about rabbit farming, Mr. Hoang shared: In 2009, he and his wife went to Dinh market to buy a pair of breeding rabbits to try raising them, unexpectedly they grew into a herd very quickly. After only 1 year, a pair of breeding rabbits multiplied into a hundred. Realizing that raising rabbits was "easy", the couple considered investing in a barn to raise commercial rabbits. While raising them and consulting techniques through documents, up to now he has become a person with extensive experience in raising rabbits. That said, there were times when the couple also encountered difficulties, partly because the rabbits got sick, and then the selling price on the market was low... his wife advised him to switch to raising other animals, but he was still determined to raise them. Because for him, after each failure is a success. Since then, his family's rabbit herd has grown more and more.
His reputation spread far and wide, and many people from Dien Chau, Nghi Loc, Quynh Luu, and Do Luong came to him to buy rabbits for breeding. No matter who or where he sold them to, Mr. Hoang always gave detailed and thoughtful instructions on breeding techniques and did not forget to give his address and phone number. People in the commune who could not come in person but called him by phone were still enthusiastically instructed.
Mr. Hoang said that rabbits often suffer from intestinal diseases (stomach ache) because their intestines are very thin and weak. If they eat unclean food, they can easily get sick. Therefore, vegetables and grass must be washed thoroughly and drained before feeding rabbits. When feeding, the vegetables are tied into bunches, hung upside down, not touching the ground, and the rabbits raise their heads to eat. If they do not finish eating, the vegetables and grass will still be clean, and when they are hungry, they will eat the remaining food without getting dirty. If they put vegetables and grass on the floor of the cage, they will step on them, and their feces will stick to them, and they will get stomach aches when they eat them. Many rabbit farmers do not pay attention to this problem and will fail.
Mr. Phan Van Hoang checks rabbit meat before selling.
People often say that rabbits eat a lot and are expensive, but according to Mr. Hoang, raising rabbits is low-cost and takes advantage of available food sources that are easy to find in rural areas. Cold rice, rice, potatoes, potato vegetables, grass, water fern... picked from the fields are fed to rabbits. For mother rabbits, each rabbit is fed 2-3 times a day with vegetables or grass, and 2 small bowls of rice. Just feeding like that is enough to ensure nutrition for the rabbits. Even making a cage for the rabbits to give birth requires practical experience. When giving birth, the mother rabbit will lie in a cage that she has made. Note that the wall of the cage should be at least 10 cm high, and the bottom of the cage must be thick (with wooden bars), to prevent mice from getting in. The reason is that when baby rabbits suckle, some sleep while suckling, when the mother rabbit goes out, the 10 cm high wall will push the baby rabbits back into the cage. If the wall is too low, the mother rabbit will drag the baby rabbit out of the box, the baby rabbit will be bitten by mice, or will not be able to suckle, leading to death.
With the experience gained from many years of commercial rabbit farming, for the past few years, Mr. Hoang has always had rabbits for meat and breeding rabbits to sell on the market. Mr. Hoang and his wife boast that up to now, the family has experienced raising many animals: snakes, pythons, frogs... but raising rabbits is the highest income. Each month, the family earns from 5 to 6 million VND from rabbits. Raising rabbits is leisurely and costs little, so the monthly income for farmers is significant.
