AFP reported that on December 28, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen pledged to enact a new law banning political party leaders in the country from holding dual citizenship - a move aimed at opposition leader Sam Rainsy - who currently holds dual Cambodian and French citizenship and is hiding abroad.

According to Prime Minister Hun Sen, this new law will be passed in 2016 and will affect leaders of political parties as well as those holding positions in a number of key agencies, requiring these figures to only have Cambodian nationality.

Speaking at a graduation ceremony, Mr Hun Sen stressed: "In the future, the law on political parties must limit the leaders of these parties to only have Cambodian nationality, so these figures cannot use foreign passports to escape when problems arise."

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Hun Sen announced that he would not seek a third pardon from King Norodom Sihamoni for opposition leader Sam Rainsy, and called on him to return to the country to serve his sentence.
