The Prime Minister directed that it is necessary to eliminate backward, superstitious, bad, and negative festivals that have received negative reactions from both domestic and foreign people. |
At the press conference this afternoon, March 2, Minister and Head of the Government Office (VPCP) Nguyen Van Nen said that at the Government meeting on the same day, the Prime Minister assessed that the Tet celebration and the organization of Tet and spring celebrations for the people had achieved good results, and people were excited. However, after Tet, there were some unhappy, even sad, issues remaining.
In particular, Head of the Government Office Nguyen Van Nen said that there have been many directives from all levels on the issue of festivals to avoid chaos and exploitation... but in reality, besides the achievements, there are still many places where the organization is not good. "At the meeting, the Prime Minister directed the sectors and localities to review which things are good to maintain and promote, which things are not good, do not need to be maintained, and have an ugly image, causing reactions not only from the people in the country but also from abroad, then they should be removed. There are still many backward, superstitious, bad, negative things that need to be eliminated" - Mr. Nen shared.

Regarding the recommendation of Animals Asia to end the pig-slaughtering festival in Nem Thuong Village (Bac Ninh), some people suggested canceling this festival (as well as some current festivals such as buffalo killing in the buffalo fighting festival, buffalo praying festival...) and said that it is necessary to review and change customs in a more civilized direction. The Head of the Government Office stated that the Nem Thuong Village festival in particular, and the folk festivals of ethnic communities in general, are religious rituals and the spiritual and cultural life of local people.
"The organization of festivals must be based on the principle of respecting the wishes of the community; at the same time, promoting good traditional cultural values and humanity, eliminating bad customs that are no longer suitable for civilized society, ensuring compliance with the UNESCO International Convention on the Protection of Cultural Diversity that Vietnam participates in," Mr. Nen emphasized.
