Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc asked ADB to provide necessary support and continue to allow Vietnam to receive preferential capital from ADB.

On the afternoon of June 16, at the Government headquarters, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc received Mr. Takehiko Nakao, President of the Asian Development Bank (ADB), who is on a working visit to Vietnam.

At the meeting, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc expressed his pleasure to meet Mr. Takehiko Nakao on his return to Vietnam for an official visit. The visit took place in a very important context as Vietnam had just successfully organized the 12th Party Congress and the 14th National Assembly election.

Recognizing and appreciating Mr. Takehiko Nakao's valuable contributions to the development of ADB in recent times, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc expressed his hope that Mr. Takehiko Nakao will continue to be re-elected as ADB President in the next term (2016-2020).

The Prime Minister said that currently, ADB has funded over 160 projects in Vietnam with a total value of over 15 billion USD. All projects have been highly effective and practical, especially those in the fields of transport, electricity, irrigation, schools and hospitals. The Vietnamese Government supports and actively participates in activities to celebrate the 50th anniversary of ADB and 20 years of ADB presence in Vietnam.

In addition, the Government continues to strongly reform the fields of public investment, credit institutions and state-owned enterprises, including accelerating the equitization of state-owned enterprises. The Prime Minister also said that Vietnam will also control public debt, promote FDI attraction in priority areas; Vietnam also has an action program on renewable energy.

The Prime Minister also stressed that Vietnam supports the ADB's 2030 strategy to continue supporting member countries to address issues such as poverty, uneven development and climate change and promote the private sector. He also expressed his hope that Mr. Takehiko Nakao will direct ADB departments to closely coordinate with Vietnamese agencies to develop and implement this strategy.

The Prime Minister requested that ADB provide necessary support and continue to allow Vietnam to receive preferential capital from ADB, in order to assist Vietnam in continuing to address challenges of poverty, uneven development and climate change, with special priority given to investment in the Mekong Delta and Central Highlands regions, which are being severely affected by drought and saltwater intrusion.

ADB President Takehiko Nakao thanked Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc for taking the time to meet him and highly appreciated the Vietnamese Government's support in cooperation with ADB. He expressed his impression of Vietnam's socio-economic achievements, including bright spots such as guaranteed long-term economic growth, low inflation, low poverty rate, and impressively high school attendance rate.

President Takehiko Nakao asked Vietnam to continue to speed up the disbursement of ADB capital, and affirmed that ADB is ready to support Vietnam.
