The Prime Minister attended the 5th Mekong Subregion Summit (GMS) from December 19 to 20, demonstrating Vietnam's respect for the mechanism, promoting regional cooperation and relations with countries in the subregion, and seeking support from the international community in efforts to manage and sustainably use Mekong water resources, a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

This is also an opportunity for Vietnam to strengthen its strategic partnership with Thailand. In the GMS mechanism, Vietnam is an important link in the GMS transport corridors and a gateway for the North-South and East-West economic corridors along the southern coast.

Vietnam plays a key role in implementing the GMS's "Competitiveness, Connectivity and Community Strategy" (3Cs Strategy). Vietnam is implementing a number of major projects within the GMS framework, such as the Power Line Investment Project connecting Hatxan (Laos) with Pleiku worth over 200 million USD, the Greater Mekong Subregion Flood and Drought Risk Management and Mitigation Project, with a total capital of nearly 64 million USD, and the construction of an information highway connecting 6 sub-regions.

As of June, the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) Cooperation Program has implemented 75 investment projects, with a total cost of about 16 billion USD. These include projects to build transport, renovate airports and railways in the subregion, hydropower projects to provide cross-border electricity, and develop tourism infrastructure. These projects are highly appreciated by countries for their contributions to socio-economic development and poverty reduction in the Mekong subregion.

GMS was formed in 1992 under the initiative of the Asian Development Bank (ADB). This is the most complete cooperation program in the Mekong Subregion cooperation, including Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, Myanmar and the two provinces of Yunnan and Guangxi of China.
