Prime Minister attends the opening ceremony of the National Defense Academy

The National Defense Academy needs to strengthen scientific research and theoretical development, contributing to improving the quality of education and training, while proactively providing scientific arguments for defense strategy, advising the Party, State, Central Military Commission, and Ministry of National Defense on policies and measures to successfully carry out the task of protecting the Fatherland in the new situation.

Speaking to cadres, officers, students and soldiers of the National Defense Academy, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung said that in recent times, besides advantages, the country and the Vietnamese economy have faced great difficulties and challenges. These include the negative impacts of the global economic crisis on the Vietnamese economy; the huge losses of human lives and property due to natural disasters, storms, floods and epidemics; the sabotage of hostile forces and acts of violating sovereignty in the East Sea.

In that context, under the leadership of the Party, the management of the State, and the efforts of the entire political system, the entire people and the entire army, the country has overcome difficulties and challenges and achieved comprehensive results in socio-economic development, consolidating national defense and security potential, and enhancing foreign relations.

In the country's overall achievements, there is a great contribution from the Vietnam People's Armed Forces, including the National Defense Academy.

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung pointed out that in addition to internal difficulties and limitations, the complicated international context in recent times presents new challenges for the country. The world situation is evolving in a complex manner, intertwining the advantages of the main trend of peace, cooperation and integration, while also containing many challenges due to the slow and unstable global economic recovery; many conflicts and disputes threaten peace, stability and development. Competition, interference, calculations for personal interests, inequality; ambitions for territory and territorial waters contrary to international law are threatening efforts to build strategic trust and create a peaceful environment; strongly impacting the security situation, stability, cooperation and development of the region and the world.

Emphasizing that building and defending the country, building and protecting the Fatherland has always been a vital law of the Vietnamese people, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung said that in the new situation, we must well achieve the highest goal of firmly protecting the country's independence and sovereignty; building a strong Party and State; determining that internal strength is decisive in strengthening national strength; implementing an independent and autonomous foreign policy; doing well in strategic forecasting; building a strong armed force, proactively dealing with risks and challenges in ensuring national defense and security.

“As a country that has suffered so much pain and loss from wars of aggression, Vietnam, more than anyone else, always longs for peace - a peace that must be based on independence, sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity to build the country, improve people's lives, and care for their happiness. However, peace cannot be achieved simply by longing or wishing for it. Vietnam must become stronger in all aspects, including politics, economy, society, national defense-security, and foreign affairs - with a solid and close-knit great national unity bloc; a stable political-social environment; and ensuring democracy, progress, and social justice,” Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung emphasized.

Affirming that the National Defense Academy is one of the largest and leading academies in the country, with the mission of training and fostering senior military officers, researching issues of strategic significance in national defense and military, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung hopes that the Academy will continue to promote the tradition of the Heroic Unit of the People's Armed Forces, strive to overcome limitations and weaknesses to actively contribute to the implementation of the two strategic tasks of building and protecting the Fatherland.

In that spirit, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung requested the Academy to continue to thoroughly grasp and effectively implement the Resolution of the 11th National Congress of the Party and the resolutions of the Central Committee and the Central Military Commission, especially the Resolution of the Central Committee on the strategy of defending the Fatherland in the new period; strengthen scientific research, develop theories, contribute to improving the quality of education and training of the Academy, and proactively provide scientific arguments for the national defense strategy, advise the Party, the State, the Central Military Commission, and the Ministry of National Defense on policies and measures to successfully carry out the task of defending the Fatherland in the new situation.

Continue to strive to further improve the quality of training and education in the spirit of the Central Resolution on comprehensive fundamental innovation of education and training, continue to innovate the content of the program to be close to the target students and the requirements and tasks of protecting the Fatherland in the new situation. Train a team of senior officers who are not only good at military but also strategists in the field of national defense and security.

Strengthen and carry out scientific research well. Focus on in-depth research and forecasting of plots and tricks of hostile forces, acts of infringement on national sovereignty and independence, plots, peaceful evolution, transformational impacts, and violent overthrow to propose appropriate policies and measures, avoiding being passive and surprised in any situation.

Actively and proactively participate in the struggle in the political, ideological and theoretical fields, contributing to protecting the ideological foundation and viewpoints of the Party, protecting solidarity and unity within the Party and the political system. Take care to build the Party Committee of the National Defense Academy to be truly strong in politics, ideology and organization, associated with building a strong, comprehensive, exemplary, disciplined and exemplary Academy in all aspects.

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung expressed his belief that with its tradition and achievements, the National Defense Academy will successfully complete its tasks for the 2014-2015 school year; build the Academy into a leading center for education, training, research and development of military science and art of the army and the country, with prestige in the region and internationally; achieve many outstanding achievements, contributing to the common victory of the entire Party, people and army in the cause of innovation, for the goal of a rich people, a strong country, democracy, fairness and civilization.
