According to RIA Novosti on February 6, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in an interview with Fox News that the fight against the Palestinian Hamas movement remains Israel's mission, and US President Donald Trump has not yet spoken about his intention to send US troops to the Gaza Strip.
"I don't think he's talking about sending American troops to complete the mission of destroying Hamas. That's our commitment. That's our job," said Prime Minister Netanyahu.
Earlier, President Trump announced that the US would “take control” of the Gaza Strip and be responsible for its reconstruction. At the same time, he called the current Gaza Strip a “destroyed area” and said that its residents should leave permanently, especially to Jordan or Egypt, where they could settle. Trump also did not rule out the possibility that the US could send troops to Gaza, and promised that he would personally visit the area.
The New York Times quoted sources as saying that US officials, including those at the Pentagon and the State Department, were shocked by President Donald Trump's announcement of "controlling" the Gaza Strip and did not even conduct a preliminary assessment of the feasibility of the idea, but considered it a great thing.
The Trump administration has not even made the most basic plans to consider the feasibility of the idea, and neither the Americans nor the Israelis expected Trump to make such a proposal, the sources said. Trump has privately discussed the possibility of a US takeover of Gaza for weeks, and the idea accelerated after Trump’s special envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, returned from Gaza last week and “described the horrific conditions there,” the sources said.
RIA Novosti reported that the Palestinian Hamas movement condemned Trump's statement on expelling Palestinians from the Gaza Strip and establishing US control over the land. Palestinian Ambassador to Moscow Abdelhafiz Nofal said Palestine rejects the US President's idea. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar, speaking in parliament, called the Gaza Strip a "failed experiment" and called for listening to President Trump's idea of resettling the land's residents to other countries.
