News agencyRIA Novostiquoted Boris Grizlov, Chairman of the Supreme Council of UR, yesterday, January 22, announced the results of the Russian parliamentary election. Accordingly, Prime Minister Medvedev was re-elected as Chairman of the ruling party for the next 5-year term.

Mr Medvedev's predecessor, President Vladimir Putin, said of the result: "People have chosen stability and trust in the government by voting for the United Russia party in the face of many risks and challenges."

Founded in 2001, UR currently holds 343 of the 450 seats in the Russian lower house of parliament after winning a landslide victory in the elections last September. The election results can be considered a “test barometer” for the 2018 presidential election.

President Putin has said it is too early to say whether he will run for president in 2018, but a CIA analyst believes he is likely to run again.
