On August 22, Russian media reported that Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev made a visit to the Kuril Islands controlled by Moscow, which Japan also claims sovereignty over and calls the Northern Territories.

Russia's Sputnik news agency said Mr. Medvedev is expected to attend the National Youth Education Forum on Iturup (an island in the Kuril archipelago) and visit a number of construction sites that are part of the Kuril development program planned until 2025.

This is the first time the 12-day forum has been held in Kuril.

Last week, Japan handed over a diplomatic note to the Russian Embassy in Tokyo to protest Prime Minister Medvedev's plan to visit the islands./.
