Japan and Trinidad and Tobago agreed to strengthen cooperation in various areas, especially the economy and disaster prevention.

This is the common assessment of the leaders of the two countries within the framework of Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's official visit to this South American country.

Kyodo news agency reported on July 27 that upon arriving in Trinidad and Tobago on July 27, Prime Minister Abe held talks with his host counterpart Kamla Persad-Bissessar.

The Japanese leader said Tokyo is considering a framework agreement to help Port of Spain prevent natural disasters and negotiate environmental issues.

Mr. Abe also expressed his hope that the Government of Trinidad and Tobago would support Japan's candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council in 2015.

In addition, this year marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Trinidad and Tobago and Japan. Therefore, Prime Minister Abe proposed opening an Embassy of Trinidad and Tobago in Tokyo.

In response to this opinion, Ms. Persad-Bissessar said she would review and notify as soon as possible.

Trinidad and Tobago is the second stop on Mr. Abe's five-country Latin American tour, which runs from July 25 to August 4.

Earlier, Prime Minister Abe participated in a summit dialogue with his counterparts from two Caribbean Community (CARICOM) member countries, Antigua and Barbuda and Jamaica, to strengthen economic and energy cooperation. He is expected to leave Port of Spain and arrive in Colombia on July 28./.
