Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad submits resignation

According to Reuters, on April 10, Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad submitted his resignation to President Mahmoud Abbas after disagreements between the two leaders over government policy.

President Abbas is expected to return to the West Bank from Jordan on April 11 and it is unclear whether he will accept the resignation of Mr Fayyad, a US-educated economist.

A spokeswoman for Prime Minister Fayyad's office declined to comment on the report, which comes after a series of rumours that Abbas wanted to sack Fayyad due to internal political disputes.

Western governments have consistently supported Fayyad since he became Palestinian prime minister in 2007 and see him as the architect of Palestinian statehood efforts.
