Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ponta will face trial for corruption, anti-corruption prosecutors said on September 17, making him the first Romanian prime minister to be tried while in office.

Mr. Ponta is accused of fraud, tax evasion and money laundering between 2007 and 2011, when he practiced law before becoming Romania's prime minister in 2012. According to prosecutors, some of Prime Minister Ponta's assets have been frozen pending the outcome of the trial.

The 42-year-old leader of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) has denied all charges against him and pledged to cooperate with the investigation. Romanian President Klaus Iohannis and the opposition have called for Ponta to resign.

As part of recent anti-corruption investigations by the prosecutor’s office, a number of influential officials in Romania have also been dismissed in recent months. Most recently, Bucharest Mayor Sorin Oprescu was also arrested for accepting bribes from construction contractors./.
