Mr. Erdogan will have a whole term to "clean up" those who are trying to weaken the Turkish government.

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced on April 8 that, with the ruling party's resounding victory in the recent local elections, he will have a full term to "clean up" those who are trying to weaken the government through a corruption scandal.

Speaking to MPs from his Justice and Development Party, Erdogan warned that those who seek to exploit corruption and illegally wiretap thousands of phone calls will be held accountable. His government will directly target their activities and financial resources, even if they are abroad.

The March local elections came as Türkiye was in the midst of a 10-month political crisis over a corruption investigation that has threatened to topple Erdogan's government. Observers said the ruling Justice and Development Party's victory in the recent local elections would give Erdogan momentum for his upcoming campaign.

The 60-year-old Prime Minister will run for President in the election next August. This is also the first time Turkish people will directly vote for the President./.
