Food price increase: Opportunity for livestock farms to restore and rebuild herds

January 15, 2013 15:44

(Baonghean) -After a long period of silence and little fluctuation, the prices of livestock and poultry products in the market of our province have now been adjusted to increase. This is a positive signal for livestock farming activities at the end of the year...

Walking through the chicken stalls at Quan Lau market, it is known that the price of chicken is increasing rapidly and steadily for all types of chicken. The most notable is grouse. According to Ms. Tran Thi Thinh, owner of a fresh chicken stall, said: Up to now, the price of grouse has increased the most, the price is up to 30 thousand VND/kg, the selling price is now from 70 thousand to 100 thousand VND/kg. After grouse, free-range chicken, unkilled free-range chicken increased by 20 - 25 thousand VND/kg, the selling price is 140 - 145 thousand VND/kg. Industrial chickens, crossbred chickens increased slightly from 5 - 10 thousand VND/kg. At large wholesale markets such as Vinh market, Ga market... pork products also increased from 7 - 10 thousand VND/kg, pork loin sold for 100 thousand VND/kg, meat with skin sold for 85 thousand VND/kg. Chicken eggs and duck eggs increased by an average of 200 VND/egg. According to general assessment, food items have started to increase, showing that demand for these items is being affirmed, especially during Tet.

Food prices increase, livestock farms restore and rebuild herds.

Large-scale livestock farms in Hung Loc, Nghi Duc, Dong Vinh, or livestock farms in Nam Dan, Dien Chau have been facing difficulties in input costs and low prices for a while; so the current increase in food prices is considered a good sign. Pham Binh Farm - Hamlet 14 - Nghi Duc has a scale of over 10,000 industrial chickens and over 12,000 crossbred chickens. This is a large-scale, concentrated broiler farm, ensuring supply for the Vinh City market and neighboring areas. At this time, this facility has just sold over 30 tons of broiler chickens.

According to the analysis of farm owner Pham Binh, the current market for selling chicken products at the facility has nearly doubled, especially hybrid chicken, the price has increased by 40 thousand VND/kg, the selling price is 100 thousand VND/kg, industrial chicken has increased by 20 thousand VND/kg, the selling price is 50 thousand VND/kg. With this selling price, after deducting the cost of feed and breeding, each chicken sold has a profit of 10-15 thousand VND/kg. Thus, his concentrated breeding facility has been able to earn a net profit of nearly 200 million VND. According to Mr. Pham Binh's assessment, this source of income is not higher than previous years, but it compensates for the difficulty of the decline in prices for too long since the beginning of the year. Currently, the market demand for hybrid chicken food is scarce, his breeding facility has continued to add 12 thousand hybrid chickens to prepare for the Lunar New Year market.

According to Ms. Tran Thi Thinh, owner of a fresh chicken shop in Quan Lau market, the market for grouse is currently very scarce, this is the most difficult time for this chicken product. The reason is because of the ban on smuggling of Chinese chicken, small traders selling chicken meat have to go to Ninh Binh to find goods to sell. Free-range chicken products are even more difficult for many reasons such as unprofitable farming, stable sources of free-range chicken for a long time in Vinh City, Nam Dan, Nghi Loc are kept by people for Tet, or are sold retail many times, not focusing on collecting products as much as at the end of the year before. Therefore, small traders have to roll up to areas such as Tan Ky, Thanh Chuong, Anh Son to have many free-range chicken products to serve the needs of customers.

According to research, for nearly a year now, livestock farming has not been profitable, so some small-scale livestock households in Vinh City and neighboring districts have not been interested in investing. Only a few livestock and poultry farms with large initial investment capital have been willing to accept the difficulties to rebuild and develop livestock farming. Up to now, along with the inevitable needs of the market, food prices have increased in line with the general level of livestock investment.

Mr. Luu Cong Hoa - Head of Animal Husbandry Department - Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, said: The current price increase on food products is within a reasonable and allowable level, not increasing suddenly and in line with market trends. To contribute to stabilizing the food market at the end of the year, the Department has strengthened coordination with functional departments and branches, assigning responsibilities and requesting People's Committees of districts and cities to control food smuggling. In particular, the program coordinates with the Veterinary Department to work with the People's Committee of Ky Son district and neighboring communes to effectively prevent the situation of smuggling of cows across the border. Through checking checkpoints and quarantine, it is shown that there are only a few shipments of Laotian and Chinese chickens and cows pouring into our province. However, the data is not alarming, the province has also had timely solutions. Up to now, it can be affirmed that the situation of smuggled chickens and cows has been limited and stabilized, creating confidence for farmers and consumers about livestock products.

According to market experts, in the coming time, along with the increasing demand of consumers at the end of the year, food products in the market of our province may "increase" slightly, not increase much because traders will balance in holding down the purchase price to increase the selling price, increase the cost of products. Livestock farmers will have the opportunity to restore stability and rebuild new livestock herds.
