The consumption trend of many families during Tet is to have 3-5 kg of free-range chicken and fresh beef, so these are two items that are expected to increase in price during Tet. In addition, pork prices are increasing slightly as farmers stock up on goods to sell for Tet. Just last week, hill chicken in Tan Ky, Do Luong... cost 140,000 VND/kg (live weight) and now has increased to 150,000 VND/kg. In Nghi Loc, country chicken has increased from 120,000 VND/kg to 140,000 VND/kg. In Vinh City, country chicken is now priced at 150,000 VND/kg.
As for beef, last week the price was only 220,000 VND/kg, but by December 15 it had increased to 240,000 VND/kg. Ms. Ha, a beef seller at Quang Trung market, said: The price of beef has increased every day even though it is not yet Tet because people buy a lot to process into beef stew, beef soaked in vinegar, ham... Pork is good, many small traders are buying it to make frozen ham. As for beef, in Nam Cuong-Nam Dan, where there is a lot of beef supplied to the market, the price is constantly increasing. Mr. Nguyen Hai in hamlet 3, Nam Cuong said: Beef has been priced at 220,000 VND/kg since 2 weeks ago. In the national market, this is also the time when companies and factories stock up on raw materials to make processed goods for Tet. Demand increases sharply, so food becomes more valuable.
Meanwhile, the prices of other types of chicken such as industrial chicken, crossbred chicken... remain stable and these products are normally supplied in supermarkets during Tet with unchanged prices. The prices of free-range chicken in supermarkets are also expected to increase slightly during Tet due to suppliers increasing prices. Although supermarkets have supplied the market with a large amount of processed foods such as Mai Que Lo sausage, Ebon ham, beer garden sausage, sour sausage, crispy sausage, Vissan spring rolls, steamed shrimp, grilled squid, smoked ham... consumers after a period of use tend to return to fresh food that they prepare themselves to ensure food hygiene and safety and freshness. Therefore, the prices of country chicken and fresh beef always increase sharply during the days before Tet. In Tet 2012, the price of beef reached 280,000 VND/kg and this year is expected to be no lower.
Rising prices in the context of economic recession have affected the spending of many families during Tet. Food is an essential commodity but its price is not stabilized, so no company or organization can guarantee people a reasonable price to ensure a balance in income and expenditure. In the city, many companies have gone bankrupt, workers have not received their salaries, Tet money, or bonuses for 7-8 months, maintaining daily life is very difficult, while Tet comes, there are many shopping needs, especially food. The fear of rising food prices is real for many poor and near-poor families in the city. Ms. Hang Dao - a worker at a garment company in the city said: "I have been on unpaid leave for many months, not knowing what Tet will be like". In many construction companies, there has been no work or salary for many months, some employees said they had to return to their hometowns to "ask" their parents for food for Tet.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Hong Van - Head of Fresh Goods Department of Big C Vinh Supermarket said: Big C Vinh consumes about 1.5-2 tons of beef and pork during Tet. Big C Vinh has made a commitment to suppliers, so the price has not increased, it has been stable since 15 days before Tet. Only local beef and chicken have increased slightly, this increase is due to quarantine and transportation fees, not due to fever like in the market. At Big C Vinh, items such as tenderloin, pork belly, spare ribs, heart, kidney, etc.; beef is also diverse; fish and seafood are the same. Little or no price increase is the attraction of the supermarket in the last days of the year because the supermarket has a supply contract with suppliers for the whole year. Ms. Hong Van added: Based on many previous years, this year the purchasing power at the supermarket is forecast to be good.
Currently, BigC Vinh is the supermarket that supplies the most Tet goods among all supermarkets in the area. Fresh meat is not much, so it is very difficult to participate in price stabilization for the whole city. Some other supermarkets only sell processed foods or the way of buying and selling is not convenient, so people rarely buy. Fresh food is still being priced in many markets and negatively affects Tet shopping and Spring celebrations of many families.
