According to RT news agency on January 6, US Senator Lindsey Graham, during his visit to Tel Aviv on January 4, told Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that Washington will continue to actively support Israel and seek to realize a "nightmare" scenario for Iran's leadership.

The US expressed strong support for the Jewish state in October 2023 after a Hamas terrorist attack killed about 1,200 people and took more than 240 hostages. The Israeli retaliation, also backed by the US, killed more than 22,000 people in the Palestinian enclave, according to local health officials.

On January 4, Mr. Graham told Mr. Netanyahu that both US lawmakers and President Joe Biden's administration would "push to make Iran's worst nightmare come true," adding that the United States would "do everything we can" to support Israel.

He argued that West Jerusalem should seek reconciliation with Arab states, calling such an outcome “a nightmare for the imam in Iran.” He also described the establishment of relations between Israel and the Arab world as “an absolutely necessary ingredient to a better, more stable Middle East, a safe and secure Israel and a prosperous Palestinian people.”

The US senator also declared that he personally “is now dedicating more effort to bringing stability” to Israel and the region. Mr. Netanyahu responded, expressing his gratitude to Mr. Graham and pledging to continue Israel’s war campaign in Gaza.

“We are very determined to achieve our war goals,” Mr. Netanyahu told Mr. Graham, adding that West Jerusalem would “apply maximum power with maximum precision wherever necessary.”

Iran has repeatedly blamed Israel for the escalation in the region during the ongoing conflict, accusing it of committing “genocide” in Gaza and “igniting a fire” in the region. Tehran has also accused Western countries supporting West Jerusalem, including the United States, of using double standards when assessing the situation in the Middle East.

Last month, Mr. Graham, who is also known for his staunch anti-Iran stance, called for a bombing campaign against Iran, saying that the country’s oil fields and the headquarters of the Revolutionary Guard would be “blown off the map.”

According to Politico, Mr. Graham's statement was made in the context that Washington is said to be preparing for the possibility of the conflict between Israel and Hamas spreading beyond Gaza and spreading to the Middle East. The administration of US President Joe Biden is said to be considering scenarios that could drag Washington into a major conflict in the region.

According to media reports, the US response could be triggered by Yemen's Houthi forces, who have been targeting commercial vessels off the coast of Yemen in response to Israeli attacks on Gaza.
