This tough measure is believed to be in retaliation for the new US human rights law called Magnitsky, which targets Russian officials involved in the death of lawyer Sergei Magnitsky.

According to the results of a survey published by the Russian Public Opinion Research Foundation on the afternoon of December 25, the majority of Russians support the law banning American families from adopting Russian children. Accordingly, 56% of respondents support the ban on Americans from adopting Russian children, 21% oppose it, while 23% have no definite opinion.

In addition, 53% of opinions support tightening regulations on foreigners adopting Russian children, 21% support banning foreigners (regardless of nationality), 11% oppose and 14% have no definite answer.

Among those who support allowing foreigners to adopt Russian children, 75% of the opinions clearly state that it is necessary to carefully study the family circumstances, material conditions and spiritual life of foreigners who want to adopt Russian children. The above results also confirm that the majority of Russians support domestic adoption rather than allowing foreigners to adopt Russian children.

The Russian Public Opinion Research Foundation conducted the survey on December 22-23, with the participation of 1,500 Russians living in 100 residential areas in 46/83 federal subjects.

The investigation was conducted in the context of the State Duma (Lower House) of Russia passing the above bill./.
