Song Tranh 2 Hydropower Plant responds to dam break disaster
On the afternoon of August 29, Song Tranh Hydropower Company deployed a plan to prevent floods and storms and mitigate natural disasters for people downstream of Song Tranh 2 Hydropower Plant in Bac Tra My District, Quang Nam.

Many opinions from local leaders and people of Bac Tra My district are concerned about the safety of the project after the incident of seepage and water flowing downstream at the main dam.According to Mr. Nguyen Van Lan - Deputy Manager of Hydropower Project 3, Deputy Director of Song Tranh Hydropower Company, the waterproofing work on the dam body at the site has been completed.
On August 29, the working group of the State Acceptance Council, the State Appraisal Department of Construction Quality and two experts from Sweden had a meeting with the Management Board of Hydropower Plant 3 on the results of the waterproofing repair and an official announcement will be made in early September. “Even if there is an official announcement about the safety of the dam after the waterproofing repair, the district leaders will still request a direct inspection inside the tunnel of the dam body. If there is still water leakage and seepage, it will still be seeping, not ensuring safety and the district will resolutely recommend not allowing water storage anymore,” Mr. Tran Anh Tuan, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Bac Tra My district, affirmed.
Following the direction of the Prime Minister and in the face of the incident of seepage and massive water flow at the main dam of Song Tranh 2 Hydropower Plant, Song Tranh Hydropower Company is promoting the development of a plan to respond to the disaster of a dam break. The company has contracted with a consulting unit under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to develop a plan, map the flood in the downstream area when a dam break occurs and propose specific response solutions to save people. However, according to the company's leaders, this is a long-term plan, requiring time for careful survey, research and calculation, so it cannot be completed in 2012.
Song Tranh 2 Hydropower Plant has the largest reservoir in the Central region, with a basin area of 1,100km2, reservoir flow is about 730 million m3The project has a direct impact on the downstream areas of 7 localities including Bac Tra My, Tien Phuoc, Hiep Duc, Nong Son, Duy Xuyen, Dien Ban and Hoi An city.
