Perilla is both a spice and a popular medicinal plant among the people. There are two types: perilla with flat leaf edges, light purple color, less fragrant and perilla with curly leaf edges, dark purple color, strong fragrance.

Perilla is both a spice and a popular medicinal plant among the people. There are two types: flat-leafed perilla, light purple, less fragrant and curly-leafed perilla, dark purple, strong fragrant. The curly-leafed perilla has a higher value. Avoid confusing it with the hedge plant (wild to, Nham plant) which looks exactly like flat-leafed perilla, but does not have the fragrant scent of perilla.

Leaves: The traditional medicine name is Su Die. Pick the old leaves with the stems twice, one month apart, dry them in the shade or lightly dry them to preserve the color and flavor. The medicinal herb has a spicy taste, aromatic smell, warm properties, non-toxic, has the effect of dispersing, wind-cold, promoting qi, and neutralizing the middle, and is used in the following cases:

Cure for colds, discomfort, fatigue: Perilla leaves, Vietnamese balm, licorice, chrysanthemum or Bupleurum, each 3g, honeysuckle 4g, Atractylodes macrocephala 2g, ginger 3 slices. Boil all with 400ml of water until 100ml remains, drink twice a day. At the same time, use as a dish, folk medicine instead of meals during the day is to eat cold-relieving porridge with perilla and onion.

Cure cough due to cold: Perilla leaves, Chinese clematis leaves, chives leaves, each 12g; Vietnamese balm, ginger, each 8g. Boil and drink while hot.

Cure fever, runny nose, aching limbs: Perilla, Vietnamese balm, bamboo leaves, chrysanthemum, mint, and rehmannia root, each 20g; chrysanthemum and Chinese clematis each 5g. Grind all ingredients into fine powder, sift into a fine powder, take 2-3 times a day, 4-6g each time.

Cure flu, headache, hangover: “Huong To” cold pill contains 0.263g, perilla leaf 0.187g Cyperus rotundus, 0.15g Angelica dahurica, 0.075g tangerine peel, 0.075g licorice. Adults, take 2-3 times a day, 3 pills each time (available in pharmacies).

Treat stomachache, dysentery, diarrhea: Perilla 20g, purslane 20g, Euphorbia hirta 16g, licorice, Indian pennywort, Vietnamese balm each 12g. Take 2-3 times a day, 10-12g each in powder or pill form. If the disease is acute, it can be boiled and drunk.

For external use, combine perilla leaves with 50g of lemon leaves, lemon leaves, taro leaves, and piper lolot leaves, crush them, wrap them in a piece of fresh banana leaf, punch many holes, heat slightly, apply to the wound after cleaning and boiling the silk membrane inside the lemon peel to treat long-standing, non-healing boils. Do this once a day for several days.

Branches: The medicinal name is Tô ngạnh. Uproot the whole plant after picking the leaves a second time, remove the roots and set aside, cut into 5-10cm long pieces, dry in the sun or oven (only take the main stem, do not take the small branches).

Treatment of threatened miscarriage: 8g perilla branch, 8g hemp root, 4g mugwort or licorice root. Boil all and drink. If bleeding occurs, add 10g dragon blood leaf, or perilla branch, Dipsacus root, mugwort, each 12g, hemp root, rehmannia root, Chinese yam, each 20g, 8g Chinese cinnamon bark, 6g cardamom. Boil and drink twice a day.

Cure hemorrhage, threatened miscarriage: 10g perilla branch, 10g dragon blood leaf, 10g male areca flower, a handful of hair burned to charcoal. Roast all until golden brown, decoct and drink one dose per day.

Cure breast swelling: Perilla branches, thorny roots, each 12g, mugwort, Eclipta prostrata, burnt Thuja orientalis leaves, each 30g. Boil until concentrated, drink at once.

Cure nervous breakdown: 8g perilla branch, 12g each of Uncaria rhynchophylla, Cassia seed, and Licorice root; 8g each of Chrysanthemum, Cyperus rotundus, Polygala tenuifolia, and Curcuma longifolia. Boil and drink.

Treatment of amenorrhea: 8g perilla branch, 12g each of red sage and achyranthes; 10g ligusticum wallichii; 8g each of cinnamon, angelica, udderwort, and atractylodes. Boil and drink during the day.

For external use, combine perilla branches with cypress roots, pine bark, and cicada shells, each 20-30g. Boil water to bathe and treat swelling all over the body.

Fruit: The medicinal name is Su Zi. Pick the fruit from the tree where the fruit is intended to be harvested. Do not pick the leaves or pick only a few leaves the first time. Dry in the sun or with a dryer.

Used alone, perilla fruit with a dose of 6-12g is boiled and drunk to treat cough, vomiting, stomachache, indigestion. Used in combination with other herbs in the following cases:

Cure cough with phlegm, long-term cough and asthma in the elderly: Perilla fruit and mustard seeds, each 10g, ground into powder, drink daily with the decoction of sour apple leaves and dodder vine.

Cure cough, asthma, chest fullness, and shortness of breath: Perilla fruit and processed Pinellia ternata, each 10g; Angelica sinensis 8g; Licorice and Cinnamon each 6g; Atractylodes Rhizome, Magnolia officinalis, and Perilla leaf each 4g; 2 slices of fresh ginger; 1 jujube. Boil and drink one dose per day.

Or 10g perilla fruit; 8g each of white mustard seed and Chinese clematis root. Crush, steam with rock sugar to sweeten. Drink hot.

Treatment of urticaria: Perilla fruit 12g; Vietnamese balm, Chinese horsetail, and coix seed each 16g; Saposhnikovia divaricata and Salvia miltiorrhiza each 12g; Angelica dahurica and cinnamon each 8g; raw ginger 6g. Boil and drink during the day.

Treating pneumonia in children: Perilla fruit 8g; Houttuynia cordata and Gypsum each 20g; Honeysuckle 16g; Bamboo leaves 12g; Coptis chinensis and White Mulberry bark each 8g. Boil and drink one dose per day.

Treating edema during pregnancy (due to stagnant qi): Perilla fruit, Cyperus rotundus, dried tangerine peel, and Chinese clematis each 8g; licorice 4g; and ginger 2g. Decoct and drink.

Root: The medicinal name is Tô căn. Slice, dry in the sun or oven, use internally, perilla root with hemp root, papaya root and tobacco root each 20 - 30g. Boil to drink to treat dysentery and diarrhea.

For external use, crush perilla root, citronella leaves, taro shoots, and piper lolot leaves, wrap in gauze, heat, and apply to treat hematoma, swelling, and pain. Do this 2-3 times a day.
