Actively innovate teaching methods of History

The Ministry of Education and Training responded as follows:

(Baonghean) - At the 5th session of the 13th National Assembly, the National Assembly delegation sent a petition from Nghe An province voters to the Ministry of Education and Training with the following content: In fact, in recent years, history teaching in high schools has made progress in terms of awareness, content and teaching methods. However, there are still some students who are reluctant to study History, leading to a very vague understanding of national history. Given the above situation, it is recommended that the Ministry of Education and Training should have solutions to raise awareness of the important role of History, as well as improve the curriculum, textbooks, teaching and learning methods, and train teachers of History.

The Ministry of Education and Training responded as follows:

In recent years, the Ministry of Education and Training has made great efforts to synchronously direct the teaching of History in high schools, creating a change in awareness among the team of managers, teachers, parents and students, thereby improving the quality of teaching History. This is reflected in the increasing number of good History teaching hours, teachers actively innovating teaching methods, exams and conferences for excellent teachers being improved in quality, many students achieving high scores in university and college entrance exams and provincial and national excellent student selection exams.

However, looking seriously, currently, the way the History curriculum and textbooks are compiled still focuses heavily on teaching events, numbers, and dates; Teachers' teaching methods focus heavily on presentations, requiring students to memorize mechanically, and mainly still learn by reading and copying; The university and college entrance exams still focus heavily on testing students' memory, leading to students finding History a heavy and unattractive subject.

To overcome the above situation, in the immediate future, we need to innovate the content, curriculum, and methods of teaching and learning History; innovate testing, assessment, test making, and scientific test questions, suitable for students' awareness, close to the general education program, reasonable test structure, balance between knowledge, skills and orientation of students' attitudes and behaviors at all levels; organize excellent students' competitions in History, competitions to learn about historical events, extracurricular activities, teaching at museums, visiting historical sites, Road to Olympia competitions... Strengthen teaching and learning conditions, coordinate to build a favorable social environment for teaching History. The Ministry of Education and Training requires departments and schools to promote the construction of "Friendly schools, active students" associated with history teaching to make all students love and voluntarily learn about Vietnamese history and local history.

Currently, the Ministry of Education and Training has signed a cooperation program with the Vietnam Historical Science Association from now until 2020 to innovate the teaching and learning of History in schools; Deploy the organization of the History Olympic; Organize a national conference on teaching history, to evaluate the current curriculum and textbooks; Propose solutions to innovate the curriculum and textbooks after 2015; Innovate teaching methods, testing and evaluating History in high schools.
