(Baonghean) - According to the report of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the area of shrimp farming in the first crop in the whole province is 1,350 hectares with an estimated harvest output of 3,405 tons by the end of August. At the end of the first crop, farmers encountered many difficulties due to prolonged heat causing great damage to the farming area. Therefore, continuing to farm the second crop is identified as an important source of income for farming households.

In Hoang Mai Town, the prolonged hot weather over the past several months has caused fluctuations in the farming environment, affecting the health of shrimp and the development of some diseases. Shrimp farmers in the first crop have faced many difficulties. However, many households still achieved high productivity due to applying scientific shrimp farming processes. By the end of August, the entire town's harvest output was 1,800 tons, reaching 180% compared to the same period last year. To prepare for the new crop, in the past month, 2 white-leg shrimp nurseries in the area imported 32 million shrimp, bringing the total to 332 million. At the same time, the town has coordinated with the Department of Aquaculture to nurse 720,000 shrimp. Up to this point, the area has raised 590 hectares of shrimp in the second crop, reaching 140% compared to the same period last year.

In Quynh Xuan ward, in the first crop, Mr. Vu Duc Tuong (Block 3) was lucky to reap success. His family has more than 3 hectares of white-leg shrimp farming with a system of 8 ponds and 1 settling pond that were properly invested and built. His family raised 3 million shrimp fry. After 90 days of care, the shrimp grew well, with a yield of 28 tons. After deducting expenses, the profit was more than 2 billion VND. The first crop was successful, his family was excited and continued to raise shrimp for the second crop with 780,000 shrimp fry. Sharing about his family's plans for the next shrimp crop, he said: "In order for the second crop of shrimp to grow well, after harvesting the first crop, the family carefully cleaned and disinfected the pond. After completing all the steps, fresh water was pumped into the pond to soak for 1 week to clean the bottom, then drained the water, dried the bottom, and then pumped in salt water to start releasing the shrimp. The family bought the shrimp breed from the Hai Tuan Company Limited hatchery in Quynh Lien commune, which is one of the reputable hatcheries in the locality. Because the first days of releasing the second crop of shrimp were in hot weather, while the shrimp breed had weak resistance, the family added water to the pond regularly and according to the process of supplying it once every 10 days. In addition, the family invested in 32 aeration fan systems. With erratic weather, in the middle and end of the crop, the shrimp often suffer from red body, white feces, and hepatopancreas diseases. For ponds with cement-coated bottoms, it is necessary to treat the microbiology more densely, adding Supplement antibodies for shrimp. At the same time, on rainy days, it is necessary to limit water supply to ensure adequate water volume.

Quynh Xuan Ward currently has 85 hectares of shrimp farming for the second crop, mainly white-leg shrimp, concentrated in blocks 6 and 7. Mr. Vu Van Tu, Chairman of the Ward People's Committee, said: "Currently, households have released shrimp for the second crop, reaching about 60 - 70% of the area. Before releasing shrimp, the locality held a meeting and established 3 groups in shrimp farming areas to assign responsibilities for management, supervision and handling of related issues arising during the farming season, strengthen inspection, and promptly prevent households from arbitrarily discharging wastewater from the pond into the environment. In addition, the process of upgrading and building traffic systems and canals in shrimp farming areas is being accelerated to facilitate travel as well as ensure sanitation. To limit shrimp from getting sick and underdeveloped, local authorities have directed farmers to have a firm grasp of shrimp care science and technology, as well as monitor the growth process of shrimp to have control measures, not to let epidemic occurred".

For Quynh Luu, shrimp farmers in the district have completed the process of treating ponds and releasing shrimp for the second crop. In recent days, the district has allocated 9.2 tons of medicine to treat diseases in shrimp farming areas. At the same time, the district People's Committee has focused on directing functional departments and branches to strengthen the inspection and quarantine of shrimp seed sources, improve the quality of breeding at black tiger shrimp and white-leg shrimp hatcheries in the area. Since the beginning of the year, shrimp seed production facilities in the district have produced and sold 305 million shrimp seeds, reaching 127% of the annual plan. Currently, the district is focusing on doing a good job of quarantine shrimp seeds, regularly checking and taking water samples to limit damage to farmers and striving to win in shrimp farming for the second crop this year.

In Quynh Thanh commune, the locality has 75 hectares of shrimp farming that have been invested in and carefully prepared for the new crop. Mr. Tran Van Thuong's family (village 14) has a total shrimp farming area of 3 hectares and has completed the process of stocking more than 2.4 million shrimp. After 28 days of farming, the shrimp generally developed well, however, a small area of shrimp had digestive diseases. To overcome this, the family bought medicine for treatment, and combined it with traditional herbs such as mui leaves, monkey leaves, and crushed eclipta alba, mixed with the water and mixed into the food. He shared: “The second shrimp crop had erratic weather, with no southerly wind, so the water in the pond had difficulty balancing the temperature, negatively affecting the growth of the shrimp. The family has prepared lime and rock powder to remove alum according to regulations for the upcoming rainy days, and with the hot weather in the first days of the crop, we have removed alum and checked the pH level to make appropriate adjustments.”

At the beginning of the second crop, shrimp farmers are facing some difficulties when in the first days, shrimp diseases appeared. In August alone, Hoang Mai town had 18.64 hectares of shrimp infected with diseases, bringing the total area of shrimp infected to 152 hectares; specifically, Quynh Xuan ward had more than 79 hectares, Mai Hung ward had 36 hectares, Quynh Loc commune had nearly 18 hectares... mainly white spot and hepatopancreatic disease. The reason is that the hot weather causes algae to grow very quickly, including many types of toxic algae or dead and decomposing algae; in addition, when shrimp eat too much in hot conditions, they are very susceptible to digestive diseases. Therefore, farmers need to control the amount of food well, not to leave excess, causing water pollution. In addition, the water supply for shrimp ponds in some farming areas is being contaminated, causing pathogens to remain in the water source. This requires people in shrimp farming areas to strengthen their connections and coordinate with relevant agencies to control and properly treat water sources before supplying them to ponds.
