National Day Reception at United Nations Headquarters

According to VNA Special Correspondent, on the evening of September 1, or early morning of September 2 Vietnam time, at the United Nations headquarters in New York, the United States, National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung chaired a solemn international reception on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the August Revolution and National Day September 2.

This is the first time the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the United Nations has organized a National Day celebration party right at the United Nations headquarters with the participation of many diplomatic officials and international friends.

The party was attended by Mr. Saber Chowdhury, President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU); Mr. Mogens Lykketoft, President of the 70th United Nations General Assembly; Mr. Jan Eliasson, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations; Heads of Parliamentary Delegations of countries attending the 4th Summit of Speakers of Parliaments; Heads of Delegations of representative agencies to the United Nations; diplomatic agencies; American friends and a large number of overseas Vietnamese living and working in New York.

Speaking at the party, National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung emphasized that 2015 is a very special year for both the United Nations and Vietnam as they celebrate their 70th anniversary. On September 2, 1945, President Ho Chi Minh, the beloved leader of the Vietnamese people, read the Declaration of Independence giving birth to the Democratic Republic of Vietnam - the first state in Southeast Asia. This was a great turning point in the history of the Vietnamese nation.

The Vietnamese people will always remember and sincerely thank the great support and assistance of friends from all over the world, the United Nations, and the IPU in the struggle for national liberation and reunification as well as in the construction, protection and development of Vietnam.

Referring to the Vietnam-US relationship, National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung said that after 40 years of joint efforts and overcoming differences, the relationship between Vietnam and the US has never been as good as it is today.

The establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries (in 1995) and the “Comprehensive Partnership Agreement” (in 2013) opened a new stage of development in the spirit of moving towards a better future in Vietnam-US relations.

Speaking at the ceremony, IPU President Saber Chowdhury warmly congratulated the National Assembly and people of Vietnam on the occasion of the great national holiday; affirmed and highly appreciated the success of the 132nd IPU General Assembly in Hanoi in March 2015 with the "Hanoi Declaration" on "Sustainable Development Goals: Turning Words into Actions."

The success of this event is a positive contribution to the 4th World Conference of Speakers of Parliament and the United Nations Summit in late September 2015.

Recalling the good impressions and memories during his stay in Hanoi, Mr. Saber Chowdhury also highly appreciated the achievements in socio-economic development of Vietnam; expressing his belief that the country and people of Vietnam will achieve even more achievements in the future./.
